Cavan V Monaghan

I agree with good bit of what you say but I think it's correct to say that having a few 'potential' scorers in your full forward line changes the whole dynamic of how a team plays. You feel that if you keep your discipline, be patient & keep trying to do the right things then you will be rewarded in the end with scores in the final 3rd. Plus add in a stronger bench .....a scoring forward in particular .......then you should pull away in the end. You could see that was on the cards with the game yesterday. Similarly this is what Monaghan will face if they progress further in this championship. So no surprises really ....the only really open game this year in terms of deciding the ultimate AI winners will be Dublin v Kerry.

Hate to see a player like McManus simulating being fouled, he has to be the best forward in the country at manufacturing a free.

Well done to both teams, game went according to expectations. Cavan have the most improvement in them, as I think Monaghan are performing closer to their optimum level. Hopefully Cavan will use this commendable effort as a stepping stone to better things. Please do, for yourselves and your loyal supporters. One game at a time and Cavan will be in Croke park this year yet.

McManus is normally battered every game, I didn't see the incident with McEnroe. Martin Reilly manufactured three frees yesterday.

We really weren't playing close to our optimum level, even our best performers were a mixed bag. Alot of improvement needed for us but it's there.

You are being delusional if you think Monaghan performed yesterday at anything near their optimum level ie with 15 wides mostly from top players like McManus & McCarron etc. Cavan supporters are a better judge of where their display yesterday ranks but I suspect that with no inside forwards of note (none scored from play yesterday) then Cavan performed as well as could be expected and further improvement will only come with new quality players in ff line.

I'd say Kilian O' Conor and Michael Murphy are up there too.

A good local derby- enjoyed watching it. Cavan have made good improvements but a lot my way to go. Forget long past glories & focus on a future. Monaghan need to refine their game for the inevitable bigger games ahead of them.

Great article it's a huge rivalry and one I grew up hearing about on the Cavan monaghan border. Cavan are not far off if they stick with Mattie and get Givney and Keating back. Us well we got a lot of improving to do worry is we don't kill off matches when we get on top nearly cost us Sunday.

This was a really enjoyable match played in terrible conditions, some of the scores were terrific. Monaghan just did enough to deserve the win with McManus terrific again. Cavan are so close to making the breakthrough and I would expect them to reach the All-Ireland quarter-finals through the qualifiers.

As for Monaghan, they are definitely playing better than last year and I would make them favourities for Ulster. However they still seem overly reliant on Conor McManaus, he is the best forward in the country and capable of winning games on his own but the big teams will shut him out I feel. Still Monaghan are in a good place and getting stronger.

You could be right about us still being a little reliant on McManus. But when you have one of the best forwards in the country, it makes sense that you will more often than not look to him to get you through those tight games, especially in Ulster where he's been dealing with the suffocating blanket defences for years - whereas the likes of McCarron is still getting to grips with it.

Even still, I would say we're in a much better shape in attack than we have been for a good while. Even if McCarron hasn't come close to replicating his league form, just his presence on the field gives defenders more to think about and frees up McManus from a bit of extra attention. I still think McCarron will improve as the year goes on. He had unprecedented success in the league and all of this scrutiny he's under every game is new for him. McCarthy is a classy forward and has alot of potential, he's taken his points very well so far. Owen Duffy also has found some consistency and offers a real scoring threat from the HF line which we've lacked for a long time.

I would say our main problem in attack after Sunday is our shot selection and the amount of wides we hit. We created alot of chances in the second half especially, but failed to kill the game off when we had the chance and it almost cost us. It will definitely cost us down the line if that's not rectified. Alot of improvements needed but it's definitely fixable.
