The greatest player of all time. He owes Kerry and the GAA in general absolutely nothing. He was and still is an absolute joy to watch. Enjoy your retirement from inter-county football Gooch.

The best finisher in front of goal I've ever seen he was lethal .Balance accuracy speed of thought and the most important of all a brilliant football brain . As a supporter of any other county bar Kerry I'll be glad to see the back of him. And that my Kerry friends is the greatest compliment I can pay this genius. Enjoy your retirement Colm.

Have to say I thought he was a little over-rated for a long time. Always appreciated his talent but also thought it was exaggerated a bit because he was so slight and not your typical GAA player, and benefited a lot from being on a great team surrounded by all-time greats.

I was wrong there though cos he is one the greats in any context, no if's or but's.

Jason Reilly was a better finisher though, ok bye.

Replying To clondalkindub:  "Will the greatest forward of them all Colm Gooch Cooper retire if Dr Crokes win the All Ireland? At 34 next season and winning the greatest club prize on offer would there be much point in staying on with the Kerry seniors who are building to the future with there great minor players coming through? Personally I think if he wins the Club I think he will retire in glory and I also think he should. Don't out stay your welcome a few kerry players have already done that and it just holds back the team and talent coming through.

Jesus I get abuse on here all the time but how often am I bang on the money?

Sad day the greatest forward I've ever seen all the best Gooch."
Cringe, most people thought he would retire. I didn't realise we had to post all our thoughts on HS. 34 year old who won't make the Kerry team retires, wow shock horror.

The man my entire generation spent their childhood trying to emulate in their back gardens or playing ball with friends .............. What a genius of a footballer. I suppose the biggest compliment he deserves is that in a era of GAA dominated by negativity, blanket defences, physicallity, bulking up lads, eye gouging et al......... he is still regarded as the greatest. Imagine how good the man would of been if he had played in the free flowing era of 70's & 80's.

He walks away with every medal in the game in his back pocket.

Thanks for the memories Colm!

I think there was definitely a case of commentators going a little overboard on the praise at times when he would do something fairly routine, like a simple pass or easy enough scoring opportunity. Simple things that most players would do and no one would bat an eyelid.

In saying that though he was still probably the best forward of his generation.

Last Summer? A lot has changed since then. It was reported before the club semi final that he was going to make a decision after Crokes were finished so it is not a shock.

Hope he enjoys his retirement, has achieved much, gave us some great moments understandably faded in the last few years and his retirment is probably very timely. Enjoy

He was a pleasure to watch at times, unless he was playing against you. Then he could torture you in the stand. A great player who deserves the praise he has received. Best of luck.

Replying To yew_tree:  "Well it's a sad day when Colm Cooper retires. He destroyed Mayo on many occasions but you just have to admire his class. He made kicking a ball over the bar look easy. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Not only a great point scorer but a great reader of the game too.

Going out on a high by winning the a club All Ireland. Enjoy your retirement Colm."
We've all been there to witness our county being destroyed the the gooch but it was a privilege to see him play on a few occasions in the flesh and admire him for the player he is.

the best gaelic footballer I have ever seen, made the extraordinary look ordinary, a genius of a player who carries himself extremely well, a true legend.

Will always remember him placing the holy medal at the foot of the left post before the 2011 AI final

Thankfully my satanic sacrifices counter acted it's effectiveness

Great genius of a footballer. Privileged to have watch him play since 2002. Humble, gentleman also who never sought the limelight.

Thanks Gooch. Wishing you health and happiness in the future.
