Brian McIver believes Joe Brolly's criticism of Paul Grimley was harsh.

Brolly's stinging criticism of the Armagh manager has generated more headlines than anything that happened on the field of play last weekend and Derry manager McIver feels the former Oak Leaf star went too far:

"From a manager's perspective, Paul Grimley was going out last week to do his very best," McIver notes in today's Irish Independent.

"I don't think anyone in the country can question that. All managers are open to criticism, I know that. But the other side of it is that sometimes the criticism can be a bit over the top.

"On the day, it didn't go for Paul but that's not taking away from the amount of work and preparation that he would have put into it.

"People need to realise that. Through his own work-rate and commitment he would have given it everything. And the game was on a knife-edge at one point."
