O Domhnaill: Tribe need to get back to basics

Former Galway great Sean O'Domhnaill
Sean O Domhnaill says it's time for Galway to stop burying their heads in the sand.
Having seen his fellow countymen comprehensively defeated by Mayo in the Connacht SFC at Salthill on Sunday, the former county midfielder and selector feels that the nature of this latest loss suggests that a complete overhaul of Galway football is necessary:
"Sacking Alan [Mulholland] and the lads, that's not the answer," the 1998 and 2001 All-Ireland winner told Galway Bay FM. "Surely now the penny has dropped that we are so far behind. Football has moved on.
"We have been putting our head in the sand a bit saying that we play attractive football. But it has been shown that that is not going to win matches in the championship.
"We were second to the ball, we were weak, we didn't have any plan B, we gave up so much possession. If you were watching an U12 or U14 match you'd be giving out to them.
"But you can't blame the lads, they were outwitted, out-thought and we have to put in way more work behind the scenes. Dieticians, training, tactics, the whole idea, it is about time we wake up as supporters because this Galway team is just not good enough.
"You have got to understand the deficit is probably even more than that. I don't even think Mayo went past third gear.
"Anyone that says Mayo were at their best are codding themselves. That Mayo team is even better than that. The goal at the end gave it a bit of gloss. We seem to be going backwards instead of forwards.
"Galway are going to have to go back to basics. We can't just go out and play nice football, we have to play the style for who we are going to be playing.
"It is only two weeks ago we were the best team in the country after winning an U21 title playing very good football. But it was shown that the gulf between U21 and senior is a huge gulf."
