The hoganstand.com football team of the week
Mayo, Cavan and Westmeath got their respective championship campaigns off to winning starts yesterday … so who made our first championship football team of the week?

1. David Clarke (Mayo)

The Mayo captain enjoyed a relatively stress-free afternoon but dealt with anything that came his away in his usual, efficient manner.

2. Jason McLoughlin (Cavan)

Tasked with keeping tabs on Armagh danger man Jamie Clarke, the Shannon Gaels clubman held the Crossmaglen ace scoreless.

3. Killian Clarke (Cavan)

As a unit, the Cavan defence worked extremely well and Clarke was a vital component in that.

4. Kevin Maguire (Westmeath)

Maguire and his defensive colleagues helped frustrate the efforts of the Carlow forward line although Brendan Murphy did pose plenty of questions at full-forward.

5. James McEnroe (Cavan)

The hard-working defender popped up with a vital point which helped nip Armagh's mini second half revival in the bud.

6. Donal Vaughan (Mayo)

The attack-minded centre-back embarked on a several of his trademark forward runs and finished the game with 1-1 to his credit

7. Colm Boyle (Mayo)

Alongside Vaughan, Boyle pushed forward at every given opportunity but never neglected his defensive duties.

8. David Duffy (Westmeath)

With midfield partner John Heslin failing to perform up to his own high standards, it was left to Duffy to win most of the primary possession around midfield.

9. Aidan O'Shea (Mayo)

Aidan, and his brother Seamus, bossed the midfield exchanges in Pearse Stadium.

10. Kieran Martin (Westmeath)

The right half forward netted twice in the first half to help establish a 2-8 to 1-3 interval lead for the Lake County against Carlow.

11. Cillian O'Connor (Mayo)

The two-time 'Young Footballer of the Year' was a constant menace to the Galway defence from general play and also chipped in with six points, four of which came from frees.

12. Cian Mackey (Cavan)

The half-forward dynamo got through an enormous amount of work and his first half goal was a defining moment in the win over Armagh.

13. Enda Varley (Mayo)

Finished as his team's top scorer with 1-3 against the Tribesmen and Mayo supporters will be hoping he can keep up that return rate in the games ahead.

14. Martin Dunne (Cavan)

The Cavan Gaels star will remember his championship debut after scoring nine points, eight from play, against the Orchard County.

15. Dessie Dolan (Westmeath)

The experienced attacker rewarded Pat Flanagan's decision to start him with five points from play.
