The late Jerry Mc Grenra

March 16, 2005
The parish of Gartan and Termon lost one of its best-known characters recently with the death of Jerry Mc Grenra. Jerry was the Joint President of the Termon GAA club and died at the grand age of 91. After leaving Keelogs school at the age of 13, Jerry spent a number of years working in the family flaxmill before joining the Volunteer Force in 1934. In 1936 he went to work on building sites in Coventry during the Second World War. However, following years of hard work on the sites he returned to the picturesque shores of his beloved Lough Gartan as publican of the well-known Lough Akibbon Bar, which he ran until eight years ago. He was also known to every household as the local postman until his retirement at the age of 65. Jerry was a keen footballer and played soccer for the local team in Trentagh and GAA for Glenswilly. He was also instrumental in the formative years of the Termon GAA Club. A keen GAA and Soccer fan, he had not missed an All-Ireland or Ulster Final for the best part of 50 years. The fourth youngest in a family of 11, Jerry was the son of the late Patrick and Mary Mc Grenra of Carrick, Churchill. His wife Teresa (nee Boyle) passed away in 2003. He is survived by his daughters Margaret and Mary and his son Denis, along with ten grandchildren, and an extended circle of family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all.
