Lavelle, Seamus

March 30, 2003
The Late Seamus Lavelle The death occurred suddenly in Craigavon Area Hospital of one of Enniskillen Gaels GFC best loved and most active supporters, Seamus Lavelle. He was 66. He was being transferred from the Erne to the Royal Victoria in Belfast at the time. Mr Lavelle lived with his wife Rose (nee Brady) from Kells, County Meath) at Hillview Walk, Enniskillen. He was father of five and grandfather of 11. Seamus had been unwell since last December and had been hospitalised at various times in the interim. News of his death genuinely shocked and saddened the entire community. Despite his fierce attachment to Enniskillen - where he and Rose had lived for the past almost 34 years - he was a native of Kilmore, Lisnaskea and was one of a family of four, being pre-deceased by his brother, Tom 14 years ago. The family moved from Lisnaskea to Redhills in County Cavan and then to the Dublin area where he met his wife-to-be. He had by then qualified for the bar trade and, after marrying, he and Rose moved to London. He continued in the Licensed profession, acquiring an expertise that enabled him to secure a job in the Killyhevlin Hotel, and other local hostelries on returning to Fermanagh. His interest in and love for the GAA were legendary, with the Ulster final a date not to be missed. So too was his loyalty to Enniskillen Gaels with whom he had the pleasure of seeing his son, Kevin play. Early retirement in his late 50's gave him more scope for those outlets. He had a good quiz brain and enjoyed newspaper competitions, TV quizzes and keeping abreast with politics. He was very devoted to Rose and his family and enjoyed family get-togethers which, more recently took in the next generation whose visits he looked forward to. Prior to the removal of his remains, Fr Noel McGahan CC conducted a prayer service in the home and on arrival at St Michael's Church, the remains were received by Fr Brian D'Arcy, CP, a personal friend. The readings were done by his son-in-law, Eugene Sweeney and daughter-in-law, Sinead; and Psalm and the hymns were rendered by Paula O'Reilly (soloist) and Mary Keenan (organ); the Prayers of the Faithful were led by three of his grandchildren, Ciaran, Seana and Cora and the Offertory gifts were taken up by his daughter and son, Eithne and Kevin. At the end of Mass the coffin was draped with the GAA flag and escorted the entire route to Breandrum Cemetery by Enniskillen Gaels GFC members to the burial plot. Mr Lavelle is immediately survived by his wife, Rose; by his family, Bernie (Eugene) Sweeney, Eileen (John) McClintock, Sean (Marian) and Kevin (Sinead), all Enniskillen and Eithne (Owen) Sweeney, Arney; by his sisters, Kay Foley and Mary Fitzpatrick, Lisnaskea, by 11 grandchildren, nephews and nieces. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Peter Carty.
