McGarrity, Oliver

April 22, 2009
The Late Oliver McGarrity The news of the unexpected death of popular newsagent, Oliver mcGarrity, in the early hours of 16th April, was received with great sadness in the local and wider area. For over four decades, just like his corner shop, Oliver was a pillar for the good of Irvinestown. His genuine support and constructive comments on community life were legendary and at all times he never hesitated to offer encouragement and practical support to countless local causes, clubs, school and individuals. He freely allowed his premises to act as a social and community point with Oliver always as the raconteur commentator but above everything else as the provider of positive advice. For over 30 years, he was a member of the Irvinestown Youth Club Advisory Committee and served as Chairman in recent years. He took immense pride in the success of the club and its members as he gave freely and generously of his time and support to the Youth Service of the Western Education and Library Board. At his funeral on Sunday Leaders plus members, past and present, formed a guard of honour and also acted as pallbearers. Players and officials from St Molaise GAC also formed a guard of honour in recognition of Oliver's sponsorship of the club. His death will leave a void in the community life of Irvinestown, as characters like Oliver are few and hard to find. Testimony to the respect that he enjoyed was the vast volume of mourners who attended his wake and funeral and the often overheard comment from people of all ages over the past days, " Will we ever see his like again?" said it all.
