Donegal GAA is mourning the death of Seamus Bonner after a short illness.

The Donegal town native, who first made his name as a midfielder before moving to full forward, was regarded as one of the greatest players ever to pull on the green and gold jersey. He won three Ulster SFC medals during an illustrious career spanning 129 games from 1972 to '85. After retiring from playing, he served as a selector under his former team-mate Brian McEniff when Donegal won their first All-Ireland title in 1992.

Along with McEniff, he holds the distinction of being involved in Donegal's first five Ulster SFC title wins, three as a player and two as a member of the management team. He began his club career with Drumbar before moving to Four Masters and then to Civil Service, who he captained to a Dublin SFC win in 1980.

Seamus, who had a brief spell as Leitrim manager, was father of Kevin Bonner, who has starred for St. Brigid's and Dublin in recent years.
