A late goal from substitute Dara Shovlin handed Dublin champions Ballyboden St. Enda's victory over their Wicklow counterparts Rathnew in a tempestuous Leinster club football quarter-final at Parnell Park. Ballyboden St. Enda's1-10 Rathnew1-7 Shovlin was only on the pitch about 30 seconds when he took a pass from Conal Keaney to coolly fire past Rathnew 'keeper Peter Dignam for the decisive score after 56 minutes. The goal gave Ballyboden a 1-9 to 1-7 lead and they made sure of victory thanks to a point from another substitute, Paul Galvin, one minute later. The game ended in controversy when referee Maurice Deegan issued straight red cards to midfield totems Declan O'Mahony (Ballyboden) and James Stafford (Rathnew). There was little to choose between the teams in a disappointing first half which ended with Rathnew leading by 0-4 to 0-3. Former county star Tommy Gill registered two points from frees, while Leighton Glynn and Noel Mernagh were also on target for the visitors. In a stop-start second half, Gill added three more points to push Rathnew 0-7 to 0-4 ahead after 42 minutes. Quick-fire points from O'Mahony, Simon Lambert and Conal Keaney brought 'Boden level before Glynn restored the Wicklow side's three-point lead with the opening goal. But after Keaney and Kenny Naughton had brought the margin back to a point, Shovlin popped up with the winning goal for Ballyboden, who can now look forward to a semi-final meeting with Westmeath champions Garrycastle.
