Mooney, Mick

October 26, 2005
The late Mick Mooney October is the month when most clubs are finishing up games and preparing for their AGM, County Convention and Scor. Such thoughts were put far from the minds of all connected with Glasdrumman GAC when the news filtered through of the untimely and tragic death of Glasdrumman player Mick Mooney. There is a sense of disbelief, numbness, shock and dismay at the thought of not seeing one of our key figures of the last 10 years or so donning our club's colours again. It is hard to imagine at this stage the sense of loss felt not only by his immediate family but of the impact on the rest of the club and the community in Glasdrumman and Mullartown where he lived. From his involvement with the County Minor team right trough to our recent winning of Division Three, Mick had played an integral part and made a vital contribution to the club on and off the field of play. A forward with a keen eye for a scoring chance and a fleet-footed player who caused all sorts of problems for the opposition, Mick was a key player in the teams which helped Glasdrumman progress from Division Four to Division Two, picking up the Junior Championship in 1997 and many other honours. Troubled by injuries throughout his playing career, Mick nevertheless always made a point of attending all the matches and provided invaluable advice and encouragement to his teammates. Mick was not only a mentor to many of the younger members of the squad but a true friend to all his his other teammates. Everyone at Glasdrumman GAC will miss him as a player and a friend. We extend our deepest sympathies to his grieving mother Clare, sister Mary Anne, brother-in-law Christopher and family, brother Richard, sister-in-law Julie and family, and to the wider family circle. Go dte tu slan, a Mhicil, agus go ndeanai Dia trocaire a d'anam uasail dhilis. Courtesy of the Mourne Observer 26 October 2005
