A tribute to Mr Cahal Keown

It was with great sadness that family and friends learned of the death of Mr Cahal Keown, which occurred at his home 6 Commedagh Park, Castlewellan on 2 December after a difficult battle with cancer. He was 54.

Cahal was diagnosed in February 2012 and he endured his illness with great dignity and acceptance. Cahal was bom and reared at 18 Upper Square, Castlewellan, he attended St Malachy's Primary and Secondary Schools, and went to Newry Technical College where he served his apprenticeship as an electrician. He gained employment with NIE at their Downpatrick branch as a linesman and worked there for 27 years. Cahal had the opportunity to work part-time as a bus driver for the SEELB; this employment gained him personal satisfaction as he got to know the children, taking them to and from Knockevin School.

A keen sportsman, Cahal in his youth played both Gaelic and soccer for Castlewellan and he enjoyed golf, especially the 19th hole with his "fourball" friends. He was a great supporter of Castlewellan GAC enjoying both men's and women's football. In his latter years rugby was his great passion.

Cahal was a very private man who valued family life and surrounded himself with the people he loved and cared for. He is survived by his wife Roisin, daughter Deborah, son-in-law Darach Neeson, son
Gareth, his partner Kelly-Anne McCullough, his mother Kathleen Keown and he was blessed with two grandchildren, Muireann May and Eoin Cahal, who brought great joy to him especially through the difficult days of his illness. Cahal enjoyed walking and going on holidays. Even though his life was shortened by his illness, both Cahal and his wife Roisin realised that "they had it all".
