Carryduff v Leitrim Monday 29th April 2013
Carryduff's opponents in Round 4 of the East Down U14 league was Leitrim at Queen's University's Dub pitches on a bright, sunny evening with a little breeze, almost perfect conditions for Gaelic Football.
With both teams having the same record so far in the league this match was set up to be an intriguing encounter. The early stages were quite frenetic with both teams cancelling each other out somewhat. However, Daniel Coogan and Simon Henry started to assert themselves in the midfield and it wasn't long before Carryduff registered the first points of the game. With much of the play in Leitrim's half, Carryduff's forwards were beginning to find their range. Rory Reilly and Rory Oaks were combining well on the left while Christopher Campbell and Eoin Rooney were competing equally well on the right. Scores were beginning to add up as Carryduff took a commanding lead. Ryan Tweedy and Dylan Strong were on target for Carryduff as was Daniel Coogan and Simon Henry, both weighing in with a goal apiece.
Leitrim did however mount a number of challenges and when their quick and talented forwards received the ball they looked very dangerous. Indeed, within a short period Leitrim scored 3 quick goals to make the score a lot closer. Carryduff's full back line of Conor McCann, Patrick Hynds and Conor McLornan tightened up and smothered furthered attacks giving Tommy Connery in goals plenty of protection.
Playing with a slight breeze to their backs Carryduff began the second half in much the same fashion as the first. The halfback line of Caolan Cunningham, Ronan Lavery and John McGeough were able to push further up the pitch and add to Carryduff's attack. Carryduff made several changes in the second half which saw the introduction of Eoin Maguire, Ryan Murtagh, David Hilland and Michael Lawson. They took up their positions and only allowed Leitrim to add a further solidary goal in the second half. Carryduff ran out eventual winners and continue their winning ways with a final score of 9-10 to 5-1.
The Carryduff Team was:- Tommy Connery, Patrick Hynes, Conor McCann, Conor McLornan, John McGeough, Ronan Lavery (0-1), Caolan Cunningham, Daniel Coogan(1-00), Simon Henry(1-00), Rory Reilly(1-01), Dylan Strong(1-01), Christopher Campbell (0-01), Eoin Rooney(1-00), Ryan Tweedy(2-04), Rory Oakes(1-01), Ryan Murtagh (1-01), Michael Lawson, Eoin Maguire, David Hilland

Under 14 Ladies Football
The under 14 girls A and B teams continued their league campaigns this week. On Wednesday night in Cherryvale the A team clashed with Bredagh in a top of the table clash. In slippery conditions Carryduff started better and against the wind ran up a half time lead of 2-2 to 0-1 with a goal from Leah Beattie and a point from Orla Swail and 1-1 from Sarah Tunney. In the same fashion as the Feile final Bredagh came out fighting in the second half and despite some excellent goalkeeping by Bronagh McGinnity the sides were level with 15 minutes to go. Carryduff restored domination of possession and finished with three point from Orla Boyle and Sarah Tunney(2) to win 2-5 to 2-2.
The Carryduff team was Bronagh McGinnity, Ciara Tolan, Niamh Price, Aoife Harkin, Clare Thompson, Orla Boyle, Katie Rafferty, Sarah Tunney, Oonagh Lavery, Leah Beattie, Niamh Napier, Riona Hinds, Maia O'Reilly, Olivia Ferrin, Orla Swail. On Monday the Under 14 B team played Section C leaders Ballymartin in Carryduff.
Another good performance from Carryduff u14B's against a strong Ballymartin team.
On a perfect evening Carryduff got off to a great start with a Goal and a point form Samantha Gilmore before Ballymartin responded with 2 unanswered point.
Then crucially and against the run of play, Ballymartin seized on a loose ball and gave Suzie Hyland no chance as it was fired into the corner. But just before half-time Mary O'Brien linked up well with Eve McKernan and Grace Guinness to fire over 2 points to give Carryduff the lead at half time.
Ballymartin made changes to their shape and took control of key areas of the pitch and Carryduff were hit by 3 quick fire goals, which settled the game in favour of Ballymartin. To their credit Carryduff continues to make a game of it and with some fine points from Eve McKernan (2) and well taken scored form Niamh Irvine with a delightful pass from Molly Lyons to finish the scoring. A sporting game ending is a Ballymartin win but great credit to the girls for the manner in which they played.
