Around 50 lads from the Melbourne area headed down to Gaelic Park on Sunday and played a match in memory of Conal Baldwin. It was Mourne v Rest of Ireland. It was a rusty first half with the scores locked at even score at half time. The second half was more an open match with the Mourne men getting a lead which they were never to lose. Thanks very much to everyone who turned out in Gaelic park today, every county in Ireland was represented and the game was played in a great sporting manner.... great cause and thanks again for keeping Conal's memory alive.
Reports
Senior Camogie An Riocht v Ballyholland
The Senior Camogie team started off their league campaign on Monday night in Dunaval with a tight, thrilling game against Ballyholland. The girls started off with points from Marie Trainor and Sophie Colgan, Ballyholland responded with a few points. The An Riocht girls got a goal by Carrie Killen and again Ballyholland came back. There was brilliant play from defence, Joanna Sloan making excellent saves. Tierna Rooney scored a goal to keep the girls in the game and Carrie Killen and Colleen Fearon battled hard. Ballyholland added more scores on the board keeping it neck and neck, but a point from Carrie Killen at the end sealed the win, final score 2-7 to 2-6. Team Joanna Sloan, Louise Clarke, Louise Rodgers, Clara Killen, Aisling Clarke, Aine O'Reilly, Ciara Cunningham, Maria Higgins, Colleen Fearon, Marie Trainor, Sophie Colgan, Tierna Rooney, Noelle Fearon, Carrie Killen, Danielle Higgins. Subs Claire Connor, Sarah Rodgers, Aine Fearon.
U18 Camogie An Riocht v Ballygalget
For the third time in four fixtures the opposition failed to field leaving the Minor Camogs without a match.
U18 Football Burren v An Riocht
Burren goaled from the throw-in before a Kingdom hand had touched the ball. While the defence soon tightened up and limited Burren to just four first half points, two from frees; at the other end An Riocht missed too many scorable chances and trailed 1-4 to 0-5 at the break. Burren stepped it up on the restart adding 3-3 during the third quarter to put the result way beyond An Riocht who tried to the finish but fell well short, 4-10 to 0-9. Team: S Doran; A Sloan, K Colgan 0-1, L Rodgers; N McComiskey 0-1, S McDowell, D Clarke; J O'Rourke, B Rafferty; R Spiers, JP Farrell 0-2, J Sands; R White, M O'Rourke 0-3, D Campbell 0-2. Subs M Higgins, J Walker, P Doyle, C Cunningham, D Morgan.
Reserve Football An Riocht v Kilcoo
Kilcoo used all their experience and overran An Riocht at times in this rearranged PRFL fixture at Dunavil. A 'fifty' from goalie Stephen Doran opened our account almost twenty minutes in and at half time we trailed 1-10 to 0-2 and had yet to score from play. An Riocht were a lot better in the second half and a cracking Ryan White goal rallied the team. Aidan McVeigh came close when his pile driver was tipped over and the deficit was brought down to something more manageable for a time but despite a fine Stephen Doran save the visitors finished strongly for a comfortable win, 1-19 to 1-7. Team: S Doran; R Clarke, M Clarke, C McVeigh; C Cole, L McVeigh, S McVeigh; D Doyle, D Doyle; P Cole, D White, N McComiskey; D Ross, S Corr, A McVeigh. Sub S Sloan.
U14 Camogie An Riocht v Darragh Cross
The U14 Camogs beat Darragh at Dunavil.
U16 Football Bryansford v An Riocht
A ten goal thriller at St Patricks Park Newcastle finished with An Riocht deservedly on the right side of the score line, 5-15 to 5-9. After falling behind early on An Riocht hit back with a Conor Small goal giving them the lead. Some of the passing from An Riocht was of the highest order, visionary and accurate, but for all that the home side battled back with two goals to lead by 2-5 to 1-4 after twenty minutes. Thomas Sloan had hard luck making two fine saves but the loose ball fell kindly to the Ford forwards on both occasions. Then two late goals from full forward Jack Rafferty who took the ball first time and powered through were added to by an injury time strike from Darragh Campbell and An Riocht went in leading 4-7 to 3-5 at the break. A superbly struck penalty from Stephen Flood on the restart moved the visitors into the comfort zone and with points exchanged at either end Ford failed to bridge the gap. Two late goals improved the look of the score board but by then An Riocht were safely home.
Team: T Sloan; D Hardy, L Rodgers, A Harper; M Harper, C Clarke 0-1, S Cunningham; A Sloan, D Morgan 0-1; C Small 1-0, R White 0-3, S Flood 1-0; D Campbell 1-6, J Rafferty 2-3, M Rooney. Subs C Morgan, D Matthews, A Eastwood, P McComiskey, R Campbell 0-1.
Reserve Football Bryansford v An Riocht
An Riocht Reserves are still searching for a first win after a poor performance in Bryansford. An Riocht played into the wind and were scoreless at half time. The match was entering the final quarter when we strung a few points together but even that did not bring any respectability to the final score board, 4-16 to 0-3. A poor display best put behind us.
Team: B Allen; G O'Neill, M Clarke, R Clarke; S McVeigh, C Doyle, D Clarke; G Keenan, R Cunningham; C Cole, D Ross, A McVeigh; S Sloan, S Corr, S Knox. Subs J McCartan, N McComiskey.
Paul Farrell Cup U14 Seven-A-Side
An Riocht won the Paul Farrell Shield on Saturday after matches with Atticall, Bryansford, Mullahoran, St Brigids and Aughlisnafin; the St Brigids match went to extra time. Team: E Sloan, P Curran, M Carvill, JJ Eakins, R Campbell, C Clarke, C McCormack, T Murnion, P McComiskey, C Flanagan.
U12 Football An Riocht v Clan Na Derg
An Riocht and Clan Na Derg played out a high scoring thriller at Dunavil on Sunday morning in the opening fixture of the South Down U12 League. An Riocht defended well especially Curtis Flanagan in goals and Reece Flanagan and Ryan Mackey in defence while some great blocking by Christopher Flanagan and John Joe Eakins limited the visitors' chances for goals. Cormac Clarke and Caomhan Campbell had their moments around the middle of the park while upfront Conor Kelly and Joel Cunningham tried hard throughout the match with Eoin Sloan and Aidan Gribben picking off some nice scores. A good start to the season; all the players have skill in abundance and with the right attitude at practice these boys can progress.
An Riocht: C Flanagan; R Mackey, JJ Eakins, C Flanagan, R Flanagan; E Sloan, C Clarke; J Cunningham, C Kelly, A Gribben, C Campbell.
Clans: J Campbell, E Scullion, D Scullion, D Scullion, F Vaughan, H Vaughan, K Quigley, R Masterson, J McArdle, S Cunningham, C Diamond.
