Clonduff GAA Club Notes
May 24, 2012
Follow Clonduff on Twitter and Facebook!
To keep the Clonduff supporter right up to date Clonduff GAA Club has embraced social media sites Twitter and Facebook. Facebook has been up and running for some time. The Twitter account was set up recently and it was Senior player Shane O'Hagan's idea to link the two sites.
The scores from the Senior Football League game v Bryansford (Clonduff Park, Friday night) and the Ladies Intermediate Football Championship v Kilcoo (Mayobridge, Saturday night) were relayed to followers. There were some teething troubles particularly in the second half of both games in the link from Twitter to Facebook (Twitter was fine) but this is something that can be worked on!
Clonduff hope to build up a bank of volunteers who will be available to cover all games at all levels!

Launch of Five-year Plan
A great turnout of Clonduff Gaels was in the clubrooms on Wednesday 16th May for the presentation of the very ambitious plan covering the next five years. The plan embraces all aspects and all codes and identified the following areas as key to the success of the plan:
Coaching and Games Development; Administration; Public Relations, Communications and Culture;Physical Development; Finance and Fundraising; Community Enhancement
The vision of the plan is to make a great club the best it can possibly be in all areas!
The plan was co-ordinated and presented by Dermot O'Hagan - his father, Paddy - one of only two Clonduff men ever to have won eight Senior County Championships medals (the other being the late Henry Brown, RIP) attended the launch. Also in attendance was Club President Dean A Davies and Sean Óg McAteer (Down Co Secretary).
The attendees were given the opportunity to discuss the plan and were then treated to light refreshments.
Ladies Football
Ladies Intermediate Football Championship - Clonduff 3-6 Kilcoo 0-6
This was a very gutsy performance from the Clonduff girls in Mayobridge on Saturday evening (19th May) - right from the start they were in the zone and when Orla Gribben opened the scoring with block-buster of a goal there was no looking back for the girls in yellow. Half time Clonduff 2-5 Kilcoo 0-2.
Kilcoo came out all guns blazing for the second half and scored four points but the way through to goal was blocked by a very mean Clonduff defence. Final score was Clonduff 3-6 Kilcoo 0-6
Team and scorers: Louise Savage, Jackie Gilmore, Colleen McShane, Caoimhe Morgan, Jolene Branagan (1-0), Pauline McConville, Janine Branagan, Onagh Gribben, Roisin Mulholland (0-1), Kelly Carvill, Paula Gribben (1-1), Leanne McAleavey, Michaella McConville, Karen Gribben (0-4,2f), Orla Gribben (1-0). Subs used: Jenna Boden, Tara McNeill, Clodagh Nugent
Ladies U12 Football - Newry Bosco 1-3 Clonduff 5-6
The U12 girls second outing of the year took them to St Colman's College Newry where they were convincing winners over St John Bosco. All 23 girls got good game time with a middle period used to give the younger players valuable experience. In goals were Corshenna McCoy and later Cara Boden (1-0) who showed good hands under pressure. Summer and Tamzin Brannigan and Kyla Woods were strong and reliable throughout while Niamh Fearon and Erin Rafferty were outstanding in the half back line. Centre field and half forwards of Niamh Fitzpatrick, Clara Cowan (0-2) and Molly Brown (0-1) worked tirelessly with a steady supply of quality ball to the always available Amy Johnson (3-1), Caoimhe Hughes (1-0), and Tierna Mullin (0-2). An excellent team performance!
The younger players continue to show steady improvement. Bosco were a stronger opposition than their last game but Clonduff stood up and showed good determination and team work. In backs Molly Campbell, Sinead Woods, Seanin McGarry, Aoife McCusker, worked heroically, while Emma McGreevy and Alanna Donnan showed off their natural talent, with Elle McCumiskey, Elena McGarry, Sarah Kelly and Orla McCusker fought well and all displayed good fist passing and kicking throughout. Well done all. Training as usual at 7pm on Wednesday - all girls must attend to be sure of place on team.
Football
SFL - Clonduff 2-13 Bryansford 2-20
Clonduff fell 7 pts behind before they got into the game and they never were able to recover that margin. Twenty-two minutes or so into the game David McKibbin sustained a bad elbow injury and was removed to hospital - everybody in Clonduff wishes him well! Team and scorers: Gary Haughian, John McPolin, Paul McConville, Ruairi Lively, Kieran Trainor (0-1), Aidan Carr, Paul Lively (0-2), Niall McPolin, Arthur McConville (0-2), Tony McGreevy, Eugene Branagan, Paddy McGreevy, Conor Óg O'Hagan (0-1), Shane Ward (0-1), Finbarr McConville (2-4); Subs used: Darren O'Hagan (0-1), Shane McGreevy, Karl O'Hagan, Henry Brown, Stephen Branagan
PRFL - Loughinisland 0-11 Clonduff 0-8 - Team: Neil Trainor, Rory Grant, John McPolin, Kieran Trainor, Oliver Branagan, Ryan Farrell, Aaron Sherry, Stephen Branagan, Finbarr McConville, Niall McPolin, Bernard Branagan, Rory McGreevy, Shane Ward, Gary Haughian. Subs: Barry O'Hagan, Niall Crowley, Danny Burns, Ciarán McGreevy
SD RFL - Clonduff III were defeated by a strong Longstone II team. At the break there was only 3 points in it but the very strong Longstone 2nds team found an extra gear in the second half. This didn't stop some great displays from Aaron Sherry, Shay Murnin and Patrick Matthews. Team and scorers: Connor Maginn, Ciarán McGreevy, Conall Brown, Mark Copeland, Declan Gribben, Daniel McPolin, Niall Crowley, Patrick Matthews (1-0), Aaron sherry, Rory Matthews (0-1), Rory McGreevy (0-1), Shay Murnin (0-1), Kevin Parr, Rory McQuaid, Darren Harper (0-1); Sub David Quinn (0-2). Well done lads - next week Drumgath
The Minor and U14 Footballers had big wins in their leagues but the U16s and both U12 teams lost.
Congratulations to our Young Referee, Shane Milligan who took charge of his first U12 game on Saturday.
Camogie News
The Gael Linn Cup( Camogie Interprovincial) were played at Trim on Sunday, Ulster were beaten by Leinster, Finnuala Carr, Sara Louise Carr and Karen Gribben were in the Ulster panel.
The U 12 leagues got underway last week, the Clonduff A team played two games, thy drew with Castlewellan 1gl each, Clara Cowan was the Clonduff goal scorer. They had a big win over Liatroim 6-00 to 1-02, the scorers were; Niamh Fitzpatrick 2-0, Molly Brown 2-00, Clare McAlinden, Clara Cowan 1-00 each.
Despite their long injury list the senior team got their league season off to a wining start on Wednesday evening in Ballyholland winning 4-16 to 1-09.
U 8 and U 10 teams travelled to Aghaderg for the blitz on Sunday morning, it was a wonderful mornings camogie.
U14 League: Clonduff U14's travelled to Kilcoo last week and came out on the wrong side of the result. Kilcoo fully deserved their win and Clonduff need to get that fighting spirit into their game to compete at this level. The were due to play Darragh Cross on Tues 15th May, Darragh Cross failed to field. This young team needs plenty of competitive games and commitment to progress this year!
U12 Blitz:
Both A and B teams competed over the last few days; Clonduff 'B' played neighbours Mayobridge on Saturday and narrowly lost to a strong 'Bridge side' on a 1-02 to 0-00 score line. Clonduff had a nervous first half but improved dramatically in the second half with the complete backline simply outstanding - special mention must go to Beth Fitzpatrick at full back, Ali Magee at wing back and Caitlin Harper at centre back; Ailish Fearon and Amy Lowry worked equally as hard in the middle but this is effectively an U11 team who deserve great credit for their performance.
The older 'A' team were out on Monday night and gave an equally impressive display in Castlewellan. It was a fantastic game of Camogie witnessed by some parents who were very proud and surprised at the standard on display. Although Clonduff had most of the possession with 80 percent of the game being played in their forward line they could not convert the scores and the game finished at a goal each. The midfield trio of Clara Cowan, Ellen Kelly and Ellen Lively were brilliant; but the small in stature Ellen Lively gave a performance of ground hurling, speed and pure determination that was applauded by everyone there. Congratulations to the whole team on their performance and lets hope it continues throughout the season.
Under 12 Hurling. Clonduff had a good win over Ballela on Thursday night. The first half was very close but in the second the lads played with much more confidence and ran out easy winners. Thursdays game has been called off and training continues on Friday evenings from 6pm - 7pm for ALL boys from Under 12 and below. Helmets and Hurls are provided and the door is always open to anyone whether you have played before or not.
