POINTER is a youth based program aimed at facilitating young people into their local youth club. It has been designed to encourage youth to become more involved in the local youth club while also developing new skills and increasing personal confidence. Participation in POINTER entailed a regular commitment involving activities with both voluntary and statutory organisations; it operates under a points system where youth collect points on attendance & by taking part in or organising activities. POINTER participants enter the programme with the understanding that a minimum amount of points are required to qualify for a trip to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in August. To date POINTER youth have completed Princes Trust courses on Personal Development, Healthy Lifestyles, and Preparation for Work; a NMDC Good Relations Cultural Awareness course; and a Cedar Trust Disability Inclusion OCN course. Next up is participation in the Mourne Mountain Adventure on Saturday 28th April; also on a practical level they were part of a clean-up team on the Newry Canal Towpath, organised and participated in Christmas and Easter community festivities, and helped with younger children's activities at their youth clubs. The group are currently on the look out for other community initiatives to undertake.
Last week two visitors from Pittsburgh visited Mourne; Curtis Boyd Port Authority Police Officer with special responsibility for youth programs that address multiple, interrelated issues, including drugs, crime, gangs and violence, and Rob Tierney, Vice President of the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh who address issues ranging from conflict resolution to economic development including work training, post-secondary education, personal and professional development classes, educational travel, social activities, and interaction with the Greater Pittsburgh community. When the POINTER group is in Pittsburgh they will work closely with Curtis and Rob on a range of youth and community projects.
