The Late Gerry Mahon A former member of the Down District Council, Mr Gerry Mahon, passed away suddenly at his Ballykinlar home. Mr Mahon from Carricknob Road, was one of five SDLP Councillors elected to represent the seven seat Downpatrick electoral are from 1997 to 2001. However, he lost his seat to hospitals campaigner Raymond Blaney in the 2001 local government election. Commenting on the death of his former colleague, SDLP group leader Cllr Eamonn O'Neill said: "During his time as a Councillor fo the SDLP on Down District, Gerry brought his own unique contribution to that political world. "Always quiet and affable by nature, Gerry had a very strong commitment to his community. This was a reflection of his lifelong commitment to his parish and local GAA Club. "When in Council he would have worked quietly and constantly in the background on behalf of his constituents," continued Cllr O'Neill. "Those he encountered in positions of power, and to whom Gerry had made representations, knew that those respresentatons were serious and genuine because they came from Gerry and that was the nature of the man. "He brought a standard and quality of honesty and decency to public life that is so often missing today. Gerry will be sadly missed by all who knew him," Cllr O'Neill added. Mr Mahon is survived by his wife Kathleen; sons Patrick, Paul and Oliver; daughter-in-law Mary and Alison; also grandchildren Emily, Sophie, Orla, Aveen and Jack; sisters and extended family circle. Requiem Mass was held in St Patrick and St. Joseph's Church, Ballykinlar with interment following in the adjoining cemetery. Courtesy of the Mourne Observer 15th April 2009
