Marty Clarke is set for a sensational return to the Down colours as a ‘sweeper-keeper’.

The 36-year-old former All-Star forward and AFL recruit hasn’t played for the Mourne County since 2011, but has been reportedly training with goalkeepers John O’Hare and Kevin Anderson with a view to filling a playmaking ‘keeper role. First reported by the Irish News, it would be one of the GAA’s most unlikeliest comebacks if it comes to pass.

After starring in Down’s run to the 2010 All-Ireland SFC final, Clarke joined AFL outfit Collingwood the following year. He returned home to play with his club An Riocht in 2014, but was forced to retire three years later after being diagnosed with Addison’s disease.

However, he made a comeback for his club last season and is now in line for a shock inter-county return.
