Down exodus to Oz continues

December 10, 2018

Down's Anthony Doherty fouls Donal Lenihan for the Meath penalty during the first half of the NFL Division 2 clash at Pairc Tailteann.

Hot on the heels of the departures of Gerard McGovern and Shay Millar to Australia comes the news that fellow Down footballer Anthony Doherty has also made the move Down Under.

The RGU Downpatrick player has taken up an offer from his employers First Derivatives to relocate to Sydney.

"I always wanted to see a bit of the world and have been fortunate enough that work could accommodate it, but the heart sank when Paddy [Tally] and Benny [Coulter] were announced as the team management," Doherty explained to the Irish News.

"The decision was made before Paddy was ratified, but I did get a good chat with him before I left. I would have enjoyed it and it would be a good set-up to be a part of. I think the boys will do well this year."

The 24-year-old went on to say that he doesn't plan to stay in Australia long-term.
