Aughlisnafin club notes

September 25, 2018

Our Seniors missed out on a place in a first ever JFC final after a narrow defeat against Kilclief. The Fin took an early lead through Eoin Lundy and points from Oran Flanagan (4) and another from Lundy gave them a half time lead 0-6 to 0-4. In a closely contested second half Kilclief got back on level terms but a goal from Sean Fitzsimmons, a third point of the game from Lundy and a point from Shane Mooney kept the Fin ahead. With seven minutes of the game remaining Kilclief got the goal they had been threatening and took the lead for the first time in the game before using their experience to close out the game for a four point win. Final score Aughlisnafin 1-08 Kilclief 1-12. Thanks to Gerard Murray & Niall Lennon from GEM Electrical Services for sponsoring the match balls.

And so that ends the season for our seniors and coming back from having no team on the field last season it has not been too bad considering. Currently sitting in third place in the league with one round of fixtures yet to be played, they contested the Junior Feis 7’s final and a Junior championship semi final. Thanks to our manager Willie Megoran and the backroom team for their efforts over the past nine months. Also thanks to our team sponsor Mulhollands Bar and to all our match ball sponsors, your support is greatly appreciated.

*Our U11s played twice in the past week. Last Wednesday evening they were away to Kilclief knowing this was a must win game to reach the league final. Kilclief won the toss and elected to play with a strong wind at their backs. As it turned out the game was pretty even with both teams reaching half time with 1-3 apiece. Given the conditions the football on show from both teams was of the highest order. Marty Og Flanagan scored the goal and added a point. Brogan Clarke and Caolan Flanagan also taking brilliant points into the wind. Ryan Croskery also beating a rasping drive away for a ‘25. Superb defending on show from David Steen, Conor OHare, Odhran Murray and Ryan Quinn. Half time Kilclief 1-3 Aughlisnafin 1-3.

In the second half Kilclief opened the scoring to take the lead but two more points from Brogan and another from Marty Og swung the lead back to the Fin by 2. Jude Lenaghan had to go off with a staved hand with an eager David Brennan entering the fray. Daniel Steen and Dillon Steele along with Brogan very industrious in the attacking half. Kilclief registered another point before the Fin moved up a gear to score 1-4 without reply to extend their lead to 8 points. A superb goal from a Brogan free kick and points from Caolan(2), Marty Og and Ryan Quinn. The hosts were still putting up resistance and grabbed a well worked goal to trim the Fins lead back to five. Ryan Croskery made another brilliant save from another Kilclief goal attempt and Conor OHare fielded a few high balls sent in with expertise. Ryan Quinn fired over his second point of the game and Dillon Steele also on target. Brogan tapped over another to post 1-5 for the game. Leading 2-14 to 2-5 the Fin sent on three more subs to see out the final minutes. Kilclief got a third goal with virtually the last kick of the game. Final score Kilclief 3-5 Aughlisnafin 2-14. Team: R Croskery, R Quinn (0-2), O Murray, C O’Hare, Dd Steen, C Flanagan (0-3), M Flanagan (1-3), B Clarke (1-5), Dl Steen, J Lenaghan, D Steele (0-1) Subs: S Boden Hall, D Brennan, E Croskery, A Croskery.

Last Sunday morning the U11’s were away to St Johns. With both teams having already secured passage to the final on Sunday 7th October you could have been forgiven for thinking this was a dead rubber game. Far from it both teams went at it from the get go. Final score St Johns 4-13 Aughlisnafin 4-6. Best wishes to Marty Og Flanagan who had to sit this game out due to injury and to Caolan Flanagan who went off injured near the end. Team: R Croskery, D Brennan, O Murray, Dd. Steen (0-1), R Quinn (1-2), C OHare (1-2), C Flanagan, B Clarke, Dl. Steen, M Murphy, D Steele (2-1) Subs: J Lenaghan, E Croskery, A Croskery. Good luck to our players and management in the final !
