The Late Hugh McGarvey The parish of Kincasslagh lost one of its most popular senior citizens with the recent passing of Hugh McGarvey (snr), Belcruit, Kincasslagh. Aged 88 years, he was unwell for a short period previous to his passing. A native of Belcruit, he was a member of a well known Rosses family. He was predeceased by his brother James (former Donegal and Ulster footballer) and sisters, Annie and Mary. In his youth he emigrated and worked in Scotland and England on farms on a seasonal basis. After returning home he fished for some years, firstly on small boats and later on the Dad Mhuire trawler. He was also a well known machine driver and worked with Burke and Clancy Construction Company. His last years of employment were spent at Dramara Teoranta Seaweed Factory, Meenmore. An outstanding GAA footballer, he was the last surviving member apart from John McGlynn of the St. Crone's Senior County Champions Team of 1940. He also played a number of games for the Donegal Senior Team. Noted for his tidiness, Hughie was an outstanding neighbour and friend. A regular mass goer, he was a lifelong pioneer and received his golden pin some years ago. Hughie and his wife Nora had a special welcome for all callers to their home. His funeral, which was large and representative, took place to Belcruit Cemetery following Mass in St. Mary's Church, Kincasslagh, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Pat Ward, P.P., who also officiated at the graveside. The Chaplain and colleagues of Joe McGarvey (son), Rockhill Army quarters, were also present. Readers at the Mass were Declan and Eugene McGarvey, grandson and nephew. Music was provided by the McGarvey family under Noreen McGarvey and accompanied by Joe Rogers on guitar. He is survived by his wife Nora; sons, Seamus, Bill, Hugh, Eugene and Joe; daughter Margaret Byrne, Carrick; Brother-in-law Dan McGarvey; daughters-in-law, Susie, Brenda, Kathleen, Madi and Mary McGarvey, son-in-law Martin Byrne; 18 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a large number of other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
