McFadden, Edmund

March 31, 2004
The Late Edmund McFadden The recent passing of Edmund, a dear friend and colleague, came as a major blow not only to our club, which he had dedicated so much of his life and effort towards, but also throughout Donegal and UIster. People associated with the GAA in the county were shocked and saddened to hear of his untimely death. Edmund was a GAA man to the backbone and everyone associated with CLG Naomh Mícheál will miss his presence and support. We will miss his cheerful demeanour, his wry sense of humour, his anecdotes and stories but most of all we will miss his sound advice. He filled officer positions at club and county level very honourably and with great dignity never seeking recompense from either for the huge amount of dedication, time, energy and personal sacrifice he made over a long number of years. His period in office, be it with club or county, was inevitably characterised as a quiet but effective stewardship. He was a man who never sought the limelight although he surely deserved it. When times were tough and they often were, he was always there to make sure that the club soldiered on. His departure to a better world closes a chapter in the history of CLG Naomh Mícheál and leaves a void that will be difficult, if not impossible to fill. He was an ardent supporter of both club and county in bad times as well as good and he often talked of what Donegal's success in the all-Ireland final of 1992 meant to him. Our own long awaited victory in the Intermediate championship last year meant just as much if not more to him and he regularly spoke with pride of his nephew Eamon's contribution to that campaign. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of matters relating to the GAA and could name a county team lineout from years ago with ease. It was this amazing ability that saw him unsurprisingly become involved with Trath Na gCéist and Scór Bhí grá agus mórmheas ag Éamonn i ngach gediar cultúr agus thaispean sé é seo i gconaí. As our county chairman said at his graveside he was indeed "a true gael". I cannot think of a more fitting tribute. He was the most ccourteous of gentlemen, a friend to evryone, never losing his temper or resorting to bad language even in the most trying of circumstances. It was this tribute that made him such an effective and respected club representative at county board level, a position he held for many years. These few short words are vry inadequate to detail the magnificent contribution Edmund made to both club and county. Similarly it is difficult to adequately convey the huge respect he was held in throughout Donegal and beyond. CLG Naomh Mícheál would like to offer our deepest sympathy to Edmund's family on their loss. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Nollaig Ó Rodáin Rúnaí, CLG Naomh Mícheál
