Donegal legend fears for game

Donegal legend Manus Boyle
Former Donegal footballer Manus Boyle believes that 'someone will end up in a coffin' if the 'thuggery' is not stamped out of the modern game.

Boyle, a member of the Donegal side that captured the county's first All-Ireland title in 1992 was speaking after an incident that occurred in a club match in Donegal.

A young GAA player, Ronan Lennon suffered serious facial injuries and was hospitalised after an incident during a reserve league match last weekend. Another player also needed hospital treatment following the incident.

Boyle explained to the Donegal Democrat that unless GAA authorities deal with these sort of matters, then some will be killed.

"Sooner or later this was going to happen and if the association do not deal with this immediately I fear that someone is going to end up in a coffin," said Boyle.

"What we are seeing now is an anger in society, especially in the younger people. Many of them have known very little else but austerity, a lack of hope, money and self esteem. This week's figures alone show that 49 per cent of the youth in this county are unemployed.

"This anger that used to display itself in late-night brawls after night clubs is now displaying itself on the football fields of this county. Regrettably what we witnessed last weekend is not an isolated incident - it is happening practically every weekend. I am not exaggerating when I say that someone will be killed."
