An Tearmann 1-8
Cloughaneely 1-4
Termon defeated Cloughaneely in this tense Division 2 clash at Páirc Naomh Fionan in Falcarragh.
Termon got off to a great start and lead by 1-5 to 0-0 heading into injury time in the first half before the hosts came up with points from Shaun McGarvey and Declan McGarvey. 2 points from Steve McElwaine and 3 pointed frees from Ollie Doherty gave Termon a great opening period, but the goal 10 minutes before half time made a massive difference to the game.
A long ball in from the in-form Ollie Doherty dropped short just outside the small square, when Paddy McDaid rose the highest to get his fist on the ball and drive it to the net past substitute goalkeeper Ciaran Boyce, who replaced Sean McClafferty who sustained a leg injury early in the first half.
The goal was a welcome score to the Termon supporters, who must have felt a few nerves about holding on to the lead playing against a stiff breeze in the second half.
Ollie Doherty put the visitors further ahead early in the second half with a pointed free from distance into the driving wind and rain. The Cloughaneely forwards had been kept quiet by the well marshalled Termon defence, but they suddenly sprang to life with John McGarvey kicking 1-1 in a matter of minutes. He first scored a great point from a wide position. The same player then went on a great solo run before firing to the net for a goal. These scores brought Cloughaneely back into the game and left the scoreboard reading 1-6 to 1-3 with 15 minutes of football left to play. Unfortunately for the hosts this was as close as they came with points from Aidan Sweeney and John McCafferty putting Termon into a 5 point lead. Cloughaneely struggled hard to create an opening but a pointed free from Shaun McGarvey was all they could manage before Tony Gallagher called for the ball.
Termon will be delighted to come away from their North-West with a positive result especially missing up to 5 of their regular first team, and were aided in their victory by the penetrating runs of Jimmy McElwaine, Jamie Gallagher, Anthony McGrenra and Sean O'Donnell while the score taking from Steve McElwaine, John McCafferty and Ollie Doherty was a fantastic sight to see.
Cloughaneely will be disappointed by the result, but they will surely take comfort from the performance and never say die attitude of this young team, especially Michael McCausland, Kevin Mulhern, Sean McGarvey and John McGarvey.
