Letterkenny Gaels
Families and friends of Letterkenny Gaels came out in numbers and enjoyed a fun filled day at Páirc na nGael on Sunday last. From early morning the organisers were busy setting up their marquee stalls facilitating barbecues, home baking, hot beverages and loads of ice cream. Events included underage Hurling and Gaelic football, Athletics, Poc Fáda, Penalty shoot out and the traditional Novelty events. The stocks, sack race and wheelbarrow races were most popular and the family relay race the most competitive. The day concluded with the inaugural Aughaninsin Perpetual Cup played between two very evenly matched teams . Both sets of players showed of their skills to the very enthusiastic supporters Fr. Joe O'Donnell C.C., Aughaninsin handed over the Aughaninshin Perpetual Trophy to Dan Harnett, Chairman and Jim McGlynn, Secretary, Letterkenny Gaels before the throw inn. Thankfully the weather remained generous until all events had concluded.
The U21 team travelled to Glencolmcille on Wednesday evening and came home with a two point victory ( 1-8 to 0-9). Training for the Seniors and U21s continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.45pm
The U14s had a good victory over Naomh Michael in the Shield Championship Quarter final on Saturday evening last at Páirc na nGael. On Saturday last St. Eunan's U-10 Footballers travelled to St.Teresa's of Belfast to take part in the prestigious Desi Hill Memorial Cup. They came through the group stages with relative ease before defeating a solid Coleraine side in the quarter final. The semi-final line up was an all Donegal-Derry affair as St. Eunan's were paired up with Sean Dolans, while Fanad Gaels met Doire Trasna. The first semi-final was a tight affair at halftime the score was 1-01 apiece. In the second half St. Eunan's played with a greater intensity and improved accuracy to pull away but Sean Dolans to their credit did not give up and manufactured a couple of scores of their own. In the end, St. Eunan's held on to win 3-05 to 2-02. In the other semi-final Fanad Gaels played some wonderful football and scored some fine points. However, Doire Trasna made the best of their rare attacks to score 2 goals - the second from the penalty spot to dramatically take the lead 2-00 to 0-05 with a minute to play. Fanad threw everything at Doire Trasna to try to draw level but unfortunately for the Mulroy men, both their late efforts went narrowly wide.
In the final, The St. Eunan's lads continued their semi-final form as they dominated most areas of the field. Despite this, scores were slow to come as tired legs began to show in the shooting. The scores did come as the Letterkenny lads took a firm grip on the game and in the end they ran out winners on a score line of 2-00 to 0-00. This is the second year in succession that the Desi Hill Cup has come back to the O'Donnell Park.
After having a free weekend last week the Senior and Reserve Footballers travel to Glenties this Sunday to play county senior finalists, Naomh Conaill. The games throw-in at 1:30pm and 3pm. The Junior men had no games last week and none are currently scheduled for this week.
The Senior Hurlers kept up their good league form with a win over Aodh Rua last week. They have no game scheduled this week.
Congratulations to the Donegal Ladies on reaching the All-Ireland Intermediate Football Final at the end of September.
This weekend is another busy one in O'Donnell Park. On Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm, Naomh Colmcille will take on Naomh Ultan in the Junior B Football semi-final and at 5pm MacCumhaills will meet Setanta in the Senior Hurling Championship Final. Football stewards are asked to be at the Park for 2:30pm and Hurling stewards are asked to be there for 4:15pm. Then on Sunday we will host the Intermediate Football Finals. MacCumhaills meet Cloughaneely in the Reserve Final at 2:15pm and Cloughaneely also contest the Intermediate Final taking on Bundoran at 4pm. All stewards are asked to be at the Park for 1pm.
The U-14 Boys Footballers meet Gaoth Dobhair yet again in the Northern Board Championship Final on Wednesday evening in Termon with a 6:30pm throw-in.
The U-12 Boys took 46 players to Owen Beag in Derry on Saturday, fielding 5 teams. The lads came up against teams from Steelstown, Lavey, Glack, Slaughtneill, Foreglen and Swatragh. The boys acquitted themselves very well winning 9, drawing 1 and losing just 2 out of 12 games played.
This Saturday we will host an All-County U-8 Hurling Blitz in O'Donnell Park beginning at 2pm.
We would like to send our sympathies to the McGinley and McKeever families on the death of Bridget McGinley, McNeely Villas.
There were two winners in this week's Lotto draw. They matched 3 numbers and win €50 each. The numbers drawn were 6-15-16-24. Bosco Gallagher, Cullion Rd. and Karen Audino, College Farm Rd (both card)
Aodh Ruadh
~ FOOTBALL ~
A score line of 1-8 to 2-13 doesn't do justice to a very good team performance by Aodh Ruadh's under 21s against a bigger and stronger Fanad outfit. The Gaels weathered their trip down the road well and started the game brightly before the homesters came more into the game to only trail by two points at half time. The sides remained well matched until the turning point came midway through the second half when Fanad struck their second goal. After that the visitors were able to keep Ballyshannon at arm's length until the final whistle, although Aodh Ruadh battled every inch of the way. There was a great performance from Peter Boyle in the Ballyshannon goals. Ronan Drummond was excellent at centre back, while Barry Leonard also shone in his defensive duties. The midfield combination of Matthew Thompson and Donagh McIntyre soldiered gallantly, while up front PJ McGee was in excellent form, bagging himself a fine goal. It's also worth mentioning that the fact the game was an absorbing, flowing spectacle had a lot to do with sensible refereeing of Michael McShane. There is a team list and pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.
The thirds notched up another big win on the road when they defeated Glenswilly by 1-6 to 4-10 at Páirc Naomh Columba last Wednesday. Having travelled up the road with a strong team, the Ballyshannon boys were comfortable all through. Barry Gallagher put in a dynamic display at full forward, capped with a goal, while Damian Conlon did a fine job of pulling the strings at centre forward. The half back line put in a great 60 minutes with centre back, Stephen Bradley in uncompromising form and Ronan Matthews causing havoc on his roving commission. Also among the goals were the ever impressive Steven Perry and Liam Devanney.
There were no senior, reserve or third team fixtures available at time of mailing. These will be mailed to the newsletter subscribers and published on aodhruadh.org when they come to hand.
After accounting for Ardara, Aodh Ruadh next opponents in the under 14 championship are Four Masters. The game takes place on Tuesday, 7th September at Naomh Bríd's grounds, throw-in at 7pm. A big showing of Aodh Ruadh support would be greatly appreciated and should be rewarded with a great game from this promising side.
~ HURLING ~
The senior hurlers slipped to a 5-11 to 1-8 defeat against Saint Eunan's in the senior hurling league last Wednesday. They'll be hoping for better fortune in their next senior hurling league encounter which is against Four Masters in Donegal town this Wednesday at 6.30pm. Some pictures and an a match report from the Aodh Ruadh hurlers junior championship triumph are now up on aodhruadh.org.
The under 16s lost out away to MacCumhaill's in the championship on Thursday last by two points. They put in a good effort but just came up short against the Twin Towns men. They are away to Burt in the semi-final of the 'B' championship this Thursday.
The under 14s played a very competitive challenge game away to Naomh Eoin in Sligo on Monday night. In atrocious conditions the lads did well to grind out a two point win. This game saw Chris Kelly do quite well making his debut as a referee. The Fermanagh under 14 final takes place this Sunday, venue and time to be confirmed. We have pictures from Donegal's All-Ireland C win at Annyalla on Saturday 28th August which featured a very strong Aodh Ruadh contribution up on aodhruadh.org. A little earlier in August, we have new pictures from the trip of Aodh Ruadh's underage hurlers to the All-Ireland semi-final between Tipperary and Waterford up on the website. Also, we have some extra pictures from the under 14s Féile odyssey have been added to aodhruadh.org.
Preparations are well underway for the annual Aodh Ó Dálaigh under 12 tournament which is being hosted by Aodh Ruadh on Sunday 26th September. There are at least five visiting teams coming with the hope of one or two more.
The under 10s play Four Masters at home this Tuesday in a challenge game.
The under 8s are taking part in an all-county blitz in Letterkenny this Saturday. Details will be circulated during the week.
It is hoped to have some of our local skills competitions this Sunday. Training resumes as normal at 12 noon this Sunday.
