Inishowen GAA notes

March 18, 2010
Buncrana
Race cards for the annual Night of the Races are now being distributed by all managers. Horses are €10 and can be purchased from any club player. Your help to make this fundraiser a success is much appreciated, and all parents and supporters are asked to keep 16 April free so they can come and enjoy a night of 'Live Racing' which will be under starters orders for 8pm in the Lake of Shadows.
Friday night in the Scarvey is the place to be for all young budding footballers, coaching for U10s, U12s and U13s takes place-training starts at 7pm and all new and old players are most welcome. With the season just about to throw in this is an ideal time to start.
Great news reached the club on Sunday afternoon with the word that no less than eight of our U12 hurlers have been selected to represent Donegal in a County Blitz to take place in April in Croke Park! All our players who were eligible to go to the trials were selected. They are: Patrick Wilson, Kevin Vaughan, James Doherty, Daniel Deery, Craig Doherty, David Doherty, Declan McCarron and Darren Fitzpatrick. Well done to all.
Our U10 Hurlers completed their indoor hurling season on Saturday with more impressive results. Team One won all four games and Team Two won two and drew two. Team One completed their league programme undefeated they now look forward to the outdoor season.
The U16 footballers got their season started with an away defeat to Ballybofey outfit MacCumhaills on a scoreline of 4-7 to 2-8. Missing some key players this under strength side played well with Simon Cuffe, Stephen Nelson, Bruce Waldron and Matthew Barber performing well.
Girls football has moved outdoors to Scarvey on Monday nights at the following times: U10s: 6-7pm; U12s, U14s, U16s from 7-8pm. New players are always welcome to attend as well as anybody interested in coaching and helping out.
U8 football training continues as normal on Fridays at 7pm in Crana College. U6 football training resumes again on Saturday the 20th after missing a week due to coaches attending courses.
Buncrana Senior hurlers were away to Ardoyne on Saturday in the Ulster Senior League. It was a slow start after the long journey but after ten minutes they settled down with the first score. Ardoyne were no match to the fitness of the Buncrana men and this match was over as a contest at half time with Buncrana 1-12 to 0-2 at the interval. Buncrana added another goal at the beginning of the second half and the only bad note on the day was an injury to Shaun Coyle who had to come off. The team and management would like to wish Shaun a speedy recovery. This was not going to stop the Buncrana lads, if anything it pushed them on and by the final whistle the scored finish 4-21 to 0-8. The team was: Adrian Deery, Philip Harkin, Mathew Arthur, PJ Doherty, Anthony Boyle, Alan Furlong, Lee Duffy, Adam Duffy, Gerard Boyle, Fergal Doherty, Shaun Coyle, James Roe, Steven Boyle, David Guilfoyle, Ronan Walsh, Eunan Green, Stephen McFadden.
The results of the club's lotto draw that took place on Tuesday 2 March in O'Flaherty's Bar on the Main Street, were

Burt
Burt GAA Club welcomed teams from Donegal, Derry and Liverpool to Hibernian Park on Saturday for a seven-a-side charity football tournament. It was a successful and entertaining day for all involved with a lot of money raised - all of which was raised in aid of the Foyle Hospice.
Eleven teams took part with over 120 players participating in the one-day competition. There was plenty of banter along the way, with coordinator Martin Donaghey getting particular 'stick' for religiously implementing the laws of the game in his step-in role as a referee. At the end of a long day it was two Inishowen sides that faced off in the final - Buncrana and Naomh Pádraig. Congratulations to the Muff team who won the tournament and were presented with the Darren Downey and Gary McLaughlin Memorial Cup.
The Club wishes thanks all the competing clubs; the supporters who came to watch; the referees who officiated the games; and anyone who helped on the day, especially the ladies who prepared and served the food, soup and tea all day. A special thank you goes out to Martin Donaghey, who put his idea into action and organised the tournament and to which everyone at the club is grateful.
The club intends to run this an annual event and hopefully it can grow even bigger. The tournament is a reminder of two departed club members, Gary McLaughlin and Darren Downey, for whom this tournament was run in memory of and for whom the cup is named.
Club membership and registration for 2010 is now due. It is €50 for players, €20 for non-players, €10 for underage players and a €25 family package for families for more than three children. Contact any Executive member for more information on membership/registration. Please remember that membership also cover player's injury scheme for the year so it is vital all players from underage and senior get membership paid as soon as possible. Underage players and/or parents can contact managers for more details.
The senior footballers lost out to Malin last Wednesday night in the Inishowen league semi-final game played at Páirc Uí Dhochartaigh, Carndonagh. Despite Burt putting in a great shift in the first half and leading by five points at the break, Malin showed a bit more fitness and won 0-10 to 0-9.
Training for all senior/minor club members is on Tuesday nights, senior hurling is on Wednesday evenings and football on Thursday nights.
This Saturday the senior hurlers are down to play St Mary's, Rasharkin in the Ulster Senior league, away from home. Throw-in is 4.30pm. All players will be notified of arrangements at training and before travelling to Belfast.

Training for the U16 football team is on Sunday mornings at 10.30am at the pitch. Contact Damian for details. The U16 Inishowen league starts Tuesday, 30 March with a home game against Buncrana.
There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Eamon Dowds, Burt won €60. The numbers drawn were 1, 7, 5, 4, 6, 3, 2. Next week's jackpot is €1,500. Anyone with lottos should have them in the clubhouse by Thursday night at 8pm or hand it to any club member. Anyone interested in signing up to the direct debit, please contact Liam McKinney.
The U10 hurlers completed the indoor season on Saturday with the final round of the North West Go Games. The Blue team won two and lost two. All the players who have played during the indoor season have shown marked improvements in their skills and knowledge of the game. This is the real emphasis of these types of Go Games and it will prepare them before moving out onto the pitch. Many thanks to all the parents who helped with the coaches over the last few months. Children and parents will be notified when training begins at Hibernian Park in the club notes and also through the schools.
There are still a number of outstanding Dinner Dance tickets yet to be paid. Please try to have your ticket money handed into the club as soon as possible.
Congratulations to the Burt girls who represented Donegal against Tyrone in the U16 camogie championship on Saturday. The girls were: Olivia Devlin, Paula McGrory, Majella Bradley, Aimee Grant, Amy Collins, Aisling McLaughlin, Shona McGrory, Deirdre Doherty and Michaela Robinson.
It was a busy weekend for Michaela and Paula as they reached a third successive Ulster final in three years on Sunday in the handball. Unfortunately they lost out to Tyrone. Lean Kelly and Denise McLaughlin also were beaten Ulster finalists on Sunday.

Naomh Pádraig
Congratulations to Naomh Pádraig Seniors who won the Sevens Competition hosted by the Burt club at the weekend and in the process became the inaugural winners of the Downey and McLaughlin Memorial Trophy. Played in perfect conditions on Saturday, Naomh Pádraig were placed in the most difficult group when they were drawn alongside Senior clubs Buncrana and Malin.
The first game against Buncrana was a close enough affair however Buncrana's experience and precision scoring led them to a 2-6 to 1-6 victory. After Buncrana went on to defeat Malin, it meant the losers of the final group game between Naomh Pádraig and Malin would be eliminated. In a high scoring game, Naomh Pádraig controlled the first half and held a 10-point lead at the break. However Malin fought back in the second half yet were unable to claw back the lead and Muff held on for a narrow one-point victory. The quarter-final draw paired Naomh Pádraig with John Mitchel's of Liverpool, which turned out to be another close fought game. The Muff lads led for most of the game however two late points from the English based team meant the game ended level. Three penalties apiece were to decide who progressed and goals by Anthony McColgan and Oisin McColgan and superb goalkeeping by Christy Lynch meant victory for Naomh Pádraig and a semi-final clash with Letterkenny Gaels.
By this stage the gruelling 20 minute games were taking their toll however the lads persevered and overcame the Gaels challenge to win by a couple of goals to set up a rematch with Buncrana in the final. The strong Buncrana side were clear favourites and looked on course to take victory when they held a five-point lead at half time. However Naomh Pádraig battled hard and with great workrate clawed their way back into the game. When goalkeeper Christy Lynch made a rare foray forward he unleashed a fantastic shot from 20 yards into the net to bring the scores closer and when Anthony McColgan added another goal seconds later, Naomh Pádraig had turned the game around and were on their way to victory. Buncrana battled back but couldn't find the scores required so Naomh Pádraig held on for a surprise yet well-deserved victory.
Thanks to all the lads involved and work put in on the day and to management team of Aidan McAleer and Charlie Molloy. Training continues as normal midweek at 7pm on Tuesday and 7.30pm on Thursday in preparation for upcoming league campaign.
The club would like to express condolences to club member Neal Toye and family members of the late Hughie Toye who passed away last week. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Congratulation to Stephen Slattery who will represent the club on a Donegal Hurling team that plays at Croke Park on Easter Tuesday.
U16 and U18 training will take place on Monday evenings at 7pm at the clubhouse. This week the boys host neighbours Burt at Ture on Friday evening at 7.30pm. The U16s campaign starts on Tuesday 30 March at 6.30pm with a home game against Urris.

The Senior panel also travelled to Faughanvale for a warm up match during the week and gave another good account of themselves. The team will play Malin next Saturday afternoon and John will confirm the match time to the lads at training on Thursday evening.

The U12 boys will start training on Saturday at midday; their season gets underway on 13 April with a home match to Muff. Any queries should be directed to Barney Friel on 0872745123.
U10 and U8 boys and girls will be training this Saturday at 10am, training will last for an hour over the first few weeks, and this will probably be extended as the weather improves. The boys and girls will be very busy with blitzes for both the U10s and U8s arranged over the coming months and a good turnout at training is essential. There are already local teams looking for friendly matches so the boys and girls will be in action very shortly. Coaches are asked to be at Straid no later than 9.45am so that the session can be prepared properly. Any queries should be directed to David on 0860538537.
The Minor boys lost to out to a strong Carndonagh team last Tuesday evening but played well in defeat with many positives coming out of the performance. Urris put in a strong spirited display but gave away a few bad goals and were guilty of not using the ball well in front of goal. Urris looked a little rusty and will have to do a lot of ball work over the next few weeks if they are to improve. Nobody can question the work rate and commitment of the team though even if they couldn't translate that into scores. Best for Urris were Martin Shields, Shaun Friel, James Cooke and John McCarron, when introduced Connor Brennan and Jason Doherty (Tim) also did well. The lads should contact Michael or Adrian if they are unsure of match or travel arrangements for the coming week next weekend's fixture is against, they are due to play Muff next weekend and fixture times will at training which is on Thursday at 5.30pm.
The U16 boys got their season off to a winning start with a big win over Robert Emmet's in their first Northern Board league match last Sunday and will look to continue the good start when Convoy come to Straid this coming Sunday at midday. The lads will train on Tuesday evening from 5.30pm to 6.30pm; if they have any questions about the match they should contact Paul.
