Goals the difference as Cloich Cheann Fhaola prevail

Cloich Cheann Fhaola 2:12 Gaeil Fhánada 1:12

The lads delivered the performance, but the performance didn’t deliver the result in Portsalon on Friday evening as Cloich Cheann Fhaola got over the line to gain two valuable points in the first Round Intermediate Championship game in what must be said was a great game of football.

After torrential rain during the afternoon, the game was played in lovely bright conditions with the visitors enjoying the advantage of a subtle breeze in the opening period.

John Fitzgerald opened the scoring for the visitors but Mark Mc Ateer responded to leave the teams level in the fourth minute. It could have been so much better for the home team, as a Jimmy Coyle pile driver crashed off the bar and Bernard Mc Gettigan also saw an effort come back of the woodwork in the opening five minutes. Jimmy was influential in the opening quarter with his runs from deep causing considerable bother. Shaun Curran and Bernard Mc Gettigan traded scores before a sublime Eoin Mc Gonigle strike from 45 meters edged Gaeil Fhánada ahead for the first time.  The game was again tied up shortly after the water break, but in controversial circumstances. A ball into the forward line was adjudged as a mark, but only after the player played on for a few seconds, took a solo and then called for it after he was swallowed up by Gaels defenders. He converted and Shaun Maguire fired over next for the visitors, edging them ahead on the 23rd minute, but a Fergus Friel point evened it up again after Michael Sweeney opened up the Cloughaneely defence. The visitors moved two ahead with a pair of quick fire points from John Fitzgerald by the 27th minute before a Gaeil Fhánada surge forward ended with a goal. Michael Sweeney who saw a lot of ball in the first half combined with Fergus Friel and Oisín Shiels before the latter slid the ball under Cloughaneely net-minder Shaun Mc Clafferty with a classy finish. Kevin Mulhern evened things up once more two minutes into injury time before the game completely turned on it’s head in the time that followed. Paul Sweeney who was stationed at full forward was having a great duel with Odhrán Shiels, managed to squeeze the ball goalwards and it crept over the line despite the best efforts of Eoin Mc Gonigle to give Cloughaneely a crucial advantage. Two minutes later the ball was in the net again, Paul Sweeney credited with the final touch in a scrappy score. The commentators on Ráidió na Gaeltachta questioned where all the extra time at the end of the first half came from, but nevertheless Cloughaneely led by 6 at the break.

With the wind at their back, the Gaels wasted no time getting back into the contest after the break. Mark Mc Ateer was on target with two free kicks, after fouls on Sweeney and Paddy Carr. Oisín Mc Fadden drove through the centre and fired over while Fergus Friel also split the posts from an angle to leave two between the teams after 9 minutes of the second period. Gaeil Fhánada had been very much on top during that period, but Cloughaneely slowly managed to stamp their authority on things again. Kevin Mulhern was superb in the second period seemed to be positioned every place there was a dirty ball to be won or a ball to be turned over. Ciarán Mc Fadden drove forward to win a free which John Fitzgerald converted for the Falcarragh outfit’s first score of the second half in the fourteenth minute. Mc Fadden saw black just after the water break when he upended Mark Mc Ateer in a dangerous position, and Bernard duly converted to reduce the gap to two. Ciarán Mc Geady was then shown a red card for the visitors and the Gaels punished on their next attack, a fine fisted point from Conor Mc Gonigle who cut in from the right hand side.

Fanad pushed up looking for an equaliser, but squandered possession and took the wrong option a couple of times, with Cloughaneely breaking up the field twice in injury time and finding the target. Odhrán Shiels saw a late black card for a similar foul to Mc Fadden’s. Bernard Mc Gettigan fired over once more to give the Gaels a glimmer but Cloughaneely rounded off the scoring with a late late point to seal a three point win.

Goals win games, and the critical period of this game was injury time. Two goals and a point at the end of the first period and three points at the end of the second drove Cloughaneely to victory. A great game of football for the neutral, where no quarter was asked or given but it ultimately ends in disappointment for Aidan’s lads.

Cloughaneely will point to the performances of Mulhern, Fitzgerald and Paul Sweeney, while Mc Clafferty had a good outing between the sticks. Ciaran Scanlon was effective after his introduction, his experience helped kill a lot of Fanad momentum. Jimmy Coyle had influence in the early stages while Oisín Mc Fadden put in a big shift for the Gaels. Oisin Shiels took his goal well while Fergus Friel, Bernard Mc Gettigan and Conor Mc Gonigle also made good contributions.

We make the journey to Burt next Sunday for our second group game. Aidan will be hoping the lads can bounce back, and in fairness there were positives to take from the performance.

Finally, we’d like to thank everyone for their cooperation yesterday evening at Páirc Uí Shiadhail, it’s much appreciated. See you all in Burt next weekend!

Ladies finish strong to defeat Ardara

Gaeil Fhánada 4:11.  Ard a Ratha 0:09

The ladies got back to winning ways on Sunday morning when they came out on top against a stubborn Ardara outfit to record their second victory in their Intermediate Championship group.

It was a lovely bright morning in Portsalon, but the energy sapping conditions certainly were a challenge to both team, especially as the second half wore on. Fanad started the brighter, with a speculative Aisling Mc Devitt shot finding the back of the net in the second minute to give the girls and early advantage. Siobhán Sweeney who probably enjoyed her best game in a Gaeil Fhánada jersey to date slotted over a minute later but Ardara responded quickly to that score, registering a point of their own in the fourth minute.

The opposition proved to be a tricky side to break down, employing a defensive strategy but alway looking dangerous when they broke out quickly with the ball. The Gaels build up play was decent, but Ardara’s press in the scoring zone certainly frustrated many of our first half attacks, with the next three shots a goal drifting wide before the visitors slotted their second point on the break. Lauren Carr steadied the ship from a free before a sublime Maireád Coll point from a difficult angle restored the four point gap after 19 minutes. Two quick fire scores from the visitors soon halved the margin but Aisling Mc Devitt fired over a useful Fanad point. Both sides were guilty of further wides before Maireád Coll repeated the trick from pretty much the same position as the first half edged towards its conclusion. Miriam Murphy added the final score of the opening period after some patient build up play to leave the Gaels with a decent advantage at the break.

The opening exchanges of the second period were played on the visitors terms, although clear openings were difficult to find. The first two points went Ardara’s way with a lot of the play being in the middle third of the field. It was Siobhán Sweeney who finally provided the inspiration midway through the half as she broke forward to fire a lovely point over the bar. Lauren Carr followed suit a minute later to score her second of the game. A tactical switch also proved important, when Clare Friel who deputised between the sticks today was moved into the full forward line.

It wasn’t long until she made an impact, gathering a lovely pass from Hannah Shiels and burying the ball in the net. Another Siobhán Sweeney point was followed by Clare’s second goal. A long ball in towards the square was flicked to the net as Clare rose above the keeper and full back to end the game as a contest. Further points from Clare and Miriam Murphy and a late Aisling Mc Devitt goal finished the scoring for the Gaels, while Ardara tagged on a couple of late points.

The game was in the melting pot until the Gaels surged ahead in the final ten minutes. Siobhán Sweeney was excellent throughout, with Maireád Coll also putting in a big performance. Caitlin Heraghty did very well on her first senior start while Clare Friel had an impact after moving inside in the final quarter. Next up is another home fixture against Four Masters next Sunday.

Finally, we send on our best wishes to Ardara player Sarah Harkin, who sustained a leg injury yesterday.

Share of the spoils for Reserves

Naomh Muire 1:11 Gaeil Fhánada 1:11

At half time, it looked like it was going to be a dismal evening at the Banks, but a change in fortunes, a big second half performance and little help from the wind ensured a share of the spoils for Dermot Meleady’s troops last night.

Naomh Muire got off to a bright start and led by 1:04 to a point after ten minutes, Cathal Martin with a rare point in the Gaeil Fhánada colours. From then on, it was one way traffic until the half time whistle approached, with Naomh Muire firing over five points before Jonny Nanny scored the Gaels second point. By the half time, the scoreline read Naomh Muire 1:11 Gaeil Fhánada 0:02.

It was to be a game of two halves however, as Gaeil Fhánada were a rejuvenated force after the break. Naomh Muire fielded a pretty strong team, but faced the same challenge the Gaels did in the first period, struggling to cope with the conditions. A goal from Joshua Mc Ateer gave the Gaels traction and from then on they fired over some fine points. James Kerr, Patsy Friel, Paul Coyle, Joshua and Brandon Mc Clafferty all found their range, while Jonny Nanny split the posts four times over the course of the hour. Brandon Mc Clafferty finally got the equalising point to win a share of the spoils.

The team showed up very well in the second half, and will be delighted to have for something from the game having been 12 points down at the break. Next up is Red Hughs at home next week.

Minors Girls victorious in Gaoth Dobhair

Gaeil Fhánada 6:05 Gaoth Dobhair 2:06

Our minor girls made the long trip down to Gaoth Dobhair with a panel of 13 yesterday evening. Injuries and holidays had hampered the panel prior to the game, but the girls who travelled put in a hell of a performance over the hour.

Gaoth Dobhair began the game on the front foot and registered two goals in the very early exchanges. Gaeil Fhánada were a bit shellshocked but worked hard to remain in the game against a stiff wind in the first half. Eibhlin Shiels swung the first point over the bar for Gaeil Fhánada. A short time later, Gaeil Fhánada’s first goal came when Eimear Sweeney dispatched a rebound after a brilliant save by the Gaoth Dobhair keeper. The home side led by seven at the break, Gaoth Dobhair 2:05 Gaeil Fhánada 1:01.

Gaeil Fhánada were dealt with a blow when Emma Friel suffered an injury and with no subs, the girls had to play the full second half with 12 players. They showed great courage and character as they fought their way back into the game. They really got into their stride as the game drew towards it’s conclusion, firing five second half goals from Eimear Sweeney, Iseult Ní Mhathúna and Jessica Coll. Aoife Gibbons and Olivia Friel also got on the scoresheet on the evening. They held Gaoth Dobhair to a single point during the second period to secure victory.

The girls have to be commended for their work rate throughout, as they worked brilliantly as a team in difficult circumstances. Everyone played their part, but Marie Kerr in particular put in a superb performance in the blue and white.

Comhghairdeas libh uilig ar an taispeántas bhreá!
