Result from Saturday evening's Reserve fixture:

Gaeil Fhánada 1-11
St.Eunans 1-13

The Gaels will certainly see this as two points dropped as they seemed to have total control of this fixture against a very fit and hard working St.Eunans side.
Eunans got the first score through Jason Ashmore early on and it was tit for tat in the opening 15 minutes. Fanad raced into a 5-3 lead with Shaun Kerr (3), Jonny Nanny and a beauty from Rudi Feenstra setting them up nicely. Oisin McFadden then swung over and this was followed by a delicate point by John Friel which just had the distance required to drop over the bar and another long range point from Feenstra. Matthew McColgan replied for Eunans to make it 8-4 before James Kerr took down the curtain on the scoring to make the half time score;

Gaeil Fhánada 0-9
St.Eunans 0-5

The ball delivered into Jonny Nanny at full forward was excellent and he gave his marker a torrid time. Eunans hit the first score of the half with their own full forward getting on a lot of ball and giving an exhibition of score taking. Jonny Nanny was hauled down as a goal was certain and James Kerr scored the resulting free to make it 10-7 to Fanad. Another couple of Eunans' points made it a one point game before Shaun Kerr (who had an excellent game) burst through and drilled the ball past Chris O'Donnell to give Fanad breathing space. This was as good as it got as Eunans hit the next three scores all through their full forward to make it a one point game with 10 minutes remaining. The major turning and talking point then came when Nanny was taken out of it while ready to pull the trigger 8 yards from goal but somehow the referee said no penalty. Eunans had a chance to equalise with the breakaway but missed an easy chance. They atoned for the miss with the defining score of the game as their left half forward buried a goal past Shaun Friel. They put 3 points between the sides with a monster score as the clock went into injury time. Shaun Kerr went on a couple of marauding runs at a tired looking Eunans' defence and got a point to reduce it to a two point game. The last action of the game was from John Friel as his effort for a point drifted wide when a goal chance could have been manufactured as time was up.

All in all it was a disappointing defeat for Fanad but St.Eunans deserved it through economy of shooting and their defence's hard work off the ball.
Up next is an away fixture to Carndonagh. Fanad remain top of the table.

U14 Final - Report

Gaeil Fhánada 5:05
Ardara 3:06

It’s been well documented that our u14 girls team made history within the club on Monday evening when they won the Division 1 Final against another brilliant team in Ardara.

To say the game was end to end and a wonderful spectacle for the considerable crowd isn’t an exaggeration as both teams went hammer and tongs for the entire 60 minutes.

Ardara defeated Dungloe in the semi final while the Gaels accounted for Cardonagh a fortnight ago in Páirc Uí Shiadhail to ensure the top two teams in the league format reached the final

The opening minutes were frantic as both teams attempted to find openings only to be frustrated with their shooting. Megan Mc Loughlin was first to register a score, firing over a point after six minutes from a free. The Gaels were unable to build on that and Ardara hit the next two scores to put themselves into the ascendancy. A goal in the tenth minute was followed by another three minutes later. The girls from the south west added a point to leave themselves six to the good half way through the first half. Natalie Mc Fadden was the Gaels standout performer during this period, and a series of telling interceptions were to prove important later on. The half back line steadied the ship for the Gaels and Iseult Ní Mhathúna stepped up to show her class with a brilliant individual goal after 22 minutes to drag the Gaels back into the game. Although there were no further scores, both teams were attacking freely but unable to come up with the end product. Ardara has the upper hand in the closing stages of the half but the Gaels full back line of Caitlin Heraghty, Natalie Mc Fadden and Mia Mc Garvey were working hard to keep them at bay. Half time score: Gaeil Fhánada 1:01 Ardara 2:01

Gaeil Fhánada were a rejuvenated force after the break and within a minute, the sides were level. Iseult Ní Mhathúna with another fantastic individual effort struck the back of the net. Iseult and Aideen really raised their game in the middle of the field after the break to give the Gaels more of a platform going forward. Emma Hunter fired over a point five minutes in the second period to edge the Gaels ahead for the second time in the contest. Ardara responded with two of their own to get themselves back ahead by the tenth minute. The tension on the sideline was there for all to see, while the spectators from both teams really upped the decibel levels as well. Leah Mc Loughlin fired over her first of the evening to even things up again twelve minutes into the second period. What followed was a crazy few minutes where both sides made big plays. Ardara moved first, and opened up a gap in the Gaels rearguard to fire home their third goal. Gaeil Fhánada weren’t to be outdone however, and went straight down the field and fired home their third goal as well through the very effective Leah Mc Loughlin. Ardara answered that with two further point to leave them two ahead with ten minutes remaining. The game was now very stretched. Jessica Coll and Aoife Shiels were doing well to close the gaps at the back, while Caitlin Heraghty was outstanding during the final quarter. Gaeil Fhánada looked to Iseult for leadership and her driving runs from deep and interplay with the Mc Loughlins and Aideen Friel were brilliant. Rachael Friel was doing well inside and some good play between herself, Emma Mc Grenaghan opened up an opportunity for for Leah Mc Loughlin to fire over her second point. Ardara again fired back to put a two point gap between the teams. With seven minutes remaining, the Gaels popped up with a pivotal score. Some patient play through the hands eventually led to the ball being fed to Méabh Mc Ateer, who found the back of the net from a tricky angle. It was touch and go from there, but Aoife Shiels and Jessica Coll made a telling interception each as both teams left everything on the field. Megan Mc Loughlin moved into attack moments later and unleashed a high dropping shot which found the back of the net. This gave the Gaels a four point lead approaching the final few minutes. Olivia Friel entered the fray, and was busy in the closing minutes. Lisa Gallagher did brilliantly to save a high effort and Eva Blaney was on hand to avert the danger. Méabh Mc Ateer also cut out a couple of dangerous attacks in the closing stages before Emma Hunter scored the final point of the game in injury time.

Great credit must go to both teams, who served up a fantastic encounter from start to finish. The game was played in a great spirit, with both teams attacking at will throughout and it certainly won’t be the last time that the teams will go toe to toe.

Iseult Ní Mhathúna was nothing short of phenomenal in the second half, and really inspired her teammates. Captain Caitlin Heraghty was also brilliant, leading from the back but everyone played a huge part against what was a very good Ardara team.

The girls were a brilliant group to work with all year, and we would like to thank each and every member of the panel for their efforts. A big thanks to all the parents for their support and to everybody who travelled to support the girls on Monday evening and throughout the year.
