*** Glenfin finish strong to take Northern title ***

U13 Northern Division 2 Final

Gaeil Fhánada 1-8

Glenfin 1-12

A strong finish to an entertaining and high quality game by Glenfin means the Northern U13 B title is heading to Cloghan for the next 12 months. Truth be told Glenfin were wasteful over the hour but deserved their win, although Fanad did have the upper hand for some parts of the game. Glenfin's strength lay in midfield where they have two very talented individuals whose strong running caused all sorts of problems, even if their shooting boots were left behind at times.

A strong swirling breeze threatened to chase havoc however both teams adapted well with some exceptional kick passing on show particularly from Fanad goalkeeper Brian Gallagher. Glenfin dominated attacking stakes and used the breeze to their advantage but had only 3 points to show for their efforts. Fanad were wasteful, with Ben Orsi and Callum McAteer being unfortunate with passes getting caught in the breeze. Fanad had to wait 15 minutes for their first score and what a score it was. The excellent Aaron McLaughlin jinked inside and rocketed home a shot to the roof of the net to tie the scores at 1-0 to 0-3. Glenfin had several half goal chances in this period and Fanad had Shaun Carr, Gallagher and Jamie McAteer to thank for some heroic defending while Glenfin were also wasteful at times. Charlie McAteer worked tirelessly too and seen plenty action which helped nullify the Glenfin threat. McLaughlin then split the posts from distance before Glenfin responded when a goal was on. The lively Daragh O'Doherty then got on the scoresheet with a beauty to put Fanad ahead by a point with a few minutes remaining in the half. Glenfin then pointed again and also punished Fanad's short kick out to edge ahead before James McAteer pointed a fine free to tie the scores as the ref called for half time.

Gaeil Fhánada 1-3

Glenfin 0-6

Daragh O'Doherty curled over two minutes into the new half only for the Glenfin midfielder to swing over. Another handful of wides followed before James McAteer showed calm to knock over under pressure. Glenfin again responded with two quick fire points to put them ahead by a point at 1-5 to 0-9. Fanad enjoyed a purple patch with James getting two and O'Doherty getting another. There was always a goal threat from Glenfin and after another goal chance was turned over the bar by Carr, they eventually got the goal when their midfielder tucked the ball under Gallagher to give them a two point lead and only 6 minutes remaining. The Glenfin side dominated the final period as Fanad were hemmed in and knocked over two more points to give them a 4 point lead. Fanad had their chances and an excellent save from the Glenfin keeper after O'Doherty wriggled free was the icing on the cake. Callum McAteer's '45 dropped wide and with that the final whistle blew.

Fanad were bitterly disappointed but will refocus for a county quarter final versus Naomh Colmcille on Saturday 20th October. On the day Glenfin did have the lions share of attacks but were wasteful, having hit 15 wides over the hour and dropping 3 short.

The Fanad lads can be very proud and equipped themselves well both on and off the pitch.

Caolan McElwaine battled hard while Ciaran Sweeney and Callum McAteer fought bravely against quality opponents.

*** U13 Girls secure their place in Division 2 final***

Gaeil Fhánada 3:04

Killybegs 1:09

The U13 Girls made the long journey southwest last Saturday to take on Killybegs in the Division 2 semi-final. Conditions were far from perfect but this wasn't going to deter the girls from the task at hand.

Gaeil Fhánada played very well and battled superbly though the wind and the rain. Killybegs were equally as impressive and the scoreline certainly reflected this. The Fanad ladies never gave up and fought hard from the start until the final whistle sounded.

Fanad won by the slimmest of margins in the end and this came as a result of the dedication and team spirit the girls showed today, both on and off the pitch. Credit must be given to both teams as they put on a good display of football and battled well in the extreme weather conditions.

A big thank you to the parents who made the long journey today to support the team and management. Their help and support is always very much appreciated.

The girls now look forward to playing Muff in the Division 2 final on Saturday, 27th of October. (Time and venue to be confirmed)

Comhghairdeas libh a chailíní!

***Ladies finish Division 2 season on a high***

Gaeil Fhánada 4:05

Na Cealla Beaga 3:07

The ladies team followed the example of the u13 girls on Saturday, after a battling one point victory over Killybegs in Eamonn Byrne Memorial Park.

John and Hughie boasted a panel of sixteen for yesterday's encounter, adding Siobhán Coyle, Gráinne Friel, Rachel Sweeney, Aoife Gibbons and Méabh Duffy to last weeks panel while Caoimhe Walsh, Maria Dougherty and Niamh Mc Devitt were unavailable.

Killybegs started the brighter and had two points on the scoreboard within two minutes, one from play and the other from a free kick. Lauren Carr gathered the resulting kick out and raced down the field to fire over a superb score. Killybegs replied with their third before Fanad missed two decent chances. That didn’t deter them as Lauren Carr struck goal a minute later. It was slightly fortunate as it took a deflection which helped it past the Killybegs netminder.  It was to be the first of three goals in succession. The next score was an emphatic Killybegs reply. Their strong running and support play was causing Fanad all sorts of problems and on this occasion they worked the ball through the hands and clinically finished their goal opportunity. Next up, it was Fanad’s turn. Killybegs couldn’t match a strong run down the wing from Michelle Mc Devitt who then turned the ball across the face of goal for Eibhlín Shiels to palm home beyond the keeper. Both teams traded points to keep Fanad ahead by a point approaching the break. Good interplay involving Rachel Sweeney and Eibhlín Shiels opened up a chance for Clare Friel. The opportunity passed so Clare fed back to Michelle Mc Devitt who tapped over the bar to give the Gaels a two point lead at the break.

Lauren Carr gave Fanad a great start to the second half, driving a bullet into the roof of the net within the first minute. They were wasteful for a period after that however, kicking away possession and not converting their opportunities. Killybegs took full advantage of that and hit two goals and two points in the space of five minutes to give them a three point lead midway through the second half. Killybegs were in full flight and Fanad were on the back foot and did well to remain in the game. With ten minutes remaining, they discarded the sweeper and pushed on. Clare Friel was fouled in the goalmouth and a penalty was awarded. Orla Mc Gonigle stepped up in Niamh Mc Devitt’s absence and dispatched the ball to the net. Killybegs replied with a wonderful point to push themselves ahead again but Gaeil Fhánada were to have the final say. Two super Hannah Shiels free kicks in the final couple of minutes pushed the Gaels into the lead and some disciplined defending in the final moments ensured they wouldn’t be denied.

It was a positive end to a good year for the ladies and on behalf of everybody at the club we would like to thank John, Hughie and the panel for their efforts throughout the year.

A big thanks to the Killybegs club for providing some lovely food after the game as well. It was very much appreciated and we look forward to a couple of good encounters next year.

They attended a talk from Jason Black followed by workshops on Mental Health, Balancing your Sport and Study, Nutrition, and Alcohol and Drugs.

This was followed by a question and answer session with players and management from the Donegal ladies and mens county teams.
