U13 Girls County Development Blitz

Well done to Caitlin Heraghty, Aideen Friel, Iseult Ní Mhathúna and Jessica Coll who represented Gaeil Fhánada at the County Development blitz recently. The county has been divided up into five regions, with teams representing each of these regions playing in blitzes over the last 2 weekends. Gaeil Fhánada are part of the Swilly region and all four girls excelled in their performances. Maith sibh!

Parish League 2018 U6s & U8s

What a success! We finished off the season with a fantastic turn out of 43 children. The club are extremely grateful to all those parents who turned out week after week to support the club and their children.

As for the management team who worked tirelessly with these wonderful children to help them develop as players of the future but more importantly develop as confident, fun children the club want to thank you.

Thank you to all of you who provided refreshments, lots of very tasty home baking.

Lastly, a massive thank you to Swilly Mulroy Credit Union who provide us with sponsorship every year.

Seniors and Reserves bow out of the championship

Senior
Gaeil Fhánada 0:07
Aodh Ruadh 4:09

Reserve
Gaeil Fhánada 1:07
Aodh Ruadh 4:09

Both teams made their exits from the intermediate championships at the hands of Aodh Ruadh last Sunday (30th) in Ballyshannon.

The start of the game promised so much for the senior team but a lax couple of minutes where they conceded 1:02 in the opening period and the lack of any proper cohesion after the break allowed the Ballyshannon men to pull away comfortably towards the end.

Played against a fairly strong breeze, Gaeil Fhánada started brightly, and the game sat at a point apiece after ten minutes, a fine Michael Sweeney score with the outside of the right boot swirled over the bar. Sweeney was causing bother and Eoghan Carr was also looking lively inside. Fanad were two points up by the fourteenth minute, with two Carr points. It was a period where Fanad were dominant and had three good goal scoring opportunities, none of which found the back of the net. Peter Boyle displayed why he’s been in the county panel over the years with a noteworthy stop from a Carr shot. Aodh Ruadh turned the screw from the 17th minute, tapping over a point before the big turning point. Aodh Ruadh turned the ball over deep in Fanad territory. There was a hint of a foul, but Aodh Ruadh dispatched the chance clinically to the net. They added another point soon after to give themselves a three point cushion and added three more points from play to open up a six point gap at half time.

The Gaels were right in contention with the aid of a strong breeze in the second half, but it never happened for Aidan’s men after the break. Aodh Ruadh hit first, before Seamí Nanny replied with a routine free. Fanad were working hard but individual errors and turnovers were to prove costly as they tried to battle back into the game. Aodh Ruadh pointed again before a fine effort from Sweeney was brilliantly stopped by Boyle in the Aodh Ruadh goal. Seamí converted the resulting 45 before the game was eventually put to bed in the twentieth minute with the conversion of Aodh Ruadh’s second goal. The added a point but that sucked the lift out of the game. Fanad rallied towards the end of the half, with a Seamí Nanny free and Sweeney effort from plate reduced the gap but there was to be no comeback and with Fanad pushing up looking for goals Aodh Ruadh broke twice and raised the green flag themselves twice in injury time to clinically see out the game.

Brendan Friel, Fergal Friel, Jimmy Coyle, Joe Blaney, Conor Mc Gonigle, Odhrán Shiels, Fergus Friel, Brian Mc Veigh, Oisín Shiels, Seamí Nanny (0:03), Paddy Heraghty, Bernard Mc Gettigan, Ephrim Mc Fadden, Eoghan Carr (0:02), Michael Sweeney (0:02).

Matthew Gallagher for Fergal Friel,
Oisín Mc Fadden for Mc Veigh,
Ephrim Mc Fadden for Oisín Shiels.

The reserves also bowed out in the curtain raiser and it was a collection of individual errors which proved to be their downfall. Aodh Ruadh were two goals to the good by the fifth minute, one of them a penalty. Fanad got back into proceedings from there and defended very well for much of the half. A few bad decisions in the build up led to attacks breaking down but they finally got in the scoreboard in the fourteenth minute from Patsy Friel. Aodh Ruadh replied before Enda Coll added a second in the nineteenth minute. Another mistake and another goal occurred in the 23rd minute which was followed by a point from the Ballyshannon outfit. Shaun Friel then pulled off a good save before Paul Coyle landed a free kick. There was to be a fourth Ballyshannon goal and another point before the break however to leave a twelve point gap between the teams.

The Ernesiders added three more points after the break before Fanad hit a goal and a point in the space of three minutes. Paul Coyle and Patsy Friel with the points before Enda Coll fired below the keeper for a goal. Aodh Ruadh added two more points before Fanad finished off with two scores from Paul Coyle and Eoghan Walsh.

Shaun Friel, Seamus Coyle, Kevin Mc Gonigle, Aidan Heraghty, Bernard Martin, Cathal Martin, Brandon Mc Clafferty, Paul Coyle (0:03), Benny Callaghan, Cormac Friel, Enda Coll (1:01), Patsy Friel (0:02), Declan Coyle, Eoghan Walsh (0:01), Ronan Mc Ateer.

Congratulations

Huge congratulations from all at the club to senior player Seimi ‘Coshia’ Friel, who married the lovely Amanda in Tenerife last weekend. We hope you both have a happy future together!

Ulster Ladies Junior Championship Quarter Final.

Hard luck to our Ladies team, who had the narrowest of defeats to Scotstown (Monaghan) last Saturday. Bringing the game to extra time in the dying seconds of normal time, you all gave a stirring performance and kept the large support in present thoroughly entertained. You should all hold your heads high!

U10s & 12s Parish League Finals

The under 10s and 12s Parish League finals took place on Sunday (30th) evening last. There was some great skills on show in high scoring matches.  In the end 2 points were all that separated the teams in the U12s group, and Captain Dean Friel lifted the trophy for his team.

A big thank you to all the players and parents who show such commitment to the club consistently turning up for training and matches.

Thanks to Gerard Shiels for reffing the game, the managers of these groups and to everyone who helped on the day.

Finally a massive thank you to our local Credit Union (Swilly Mulroy) for their on going support of our club.

***Gallant display from the ladies falls just short***

Gaeil Fhánada 1:10

Scotstown 0:14

After Extra Time

The final score recorded a one point defeat but that did no justice to the tale that unfolded in Páirc Uí Shiadhail from 2 o clock until about a quarter past four on Saturday afternoon. The ladies of Gaeil Fhánada and Scotstown battled for almost 100 minutes in Portsalon and what unfolded was a credit to both teams and great entertainment for all in attendance.

It was wet and blustery in the build up to the game but it remained dry during the action for the most part. Scotstown played with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening period and started off proceedings as much the brighter team.

They had four points on the scoreboard by the time the Gaels got going in the eighth minute. They converted three free kicks and hit one from play, making the most of the conditions and the breeze at their backs. Lauren Carr was first on the scoreboard for Gael Fhánada, converting a free kick after eight minutes. Maireád Coll was fouled in a scorable position three minutes later and Lauren stepped up again and split the posts. Scotstown replied instantly to increase the gap to three again. Fanad battled hard during this period, and despite the big advantage the wind brought the Fanad ladies defended as if their lives depended on it, Orla Mc Gonigle, Aisling Howe and Niamh Mc Devitt making great blocks at different stages. Michelle Mc Devitt was very busy and proved a good outlet carrying the ball forward. A few high balls were let in to the edge of the square but to be fair to the Scotstown defence but they dealt with Clare Friel’s threat effectively. They finally got their sixth point in the final minute of the half, a good score from play. HT: Gaeil Fhánada 0:02 Scotstown 0:06.

Fanad had the wind at their back for the second period and would’ve been hoping to make a strong start but it was the Monaghan outfit who were first out of the blocks, registering two points in the first couple of minutes, one from play and the other from a free. Lauren Carr was again on target in the seventh minute, kicking a free after a push on Clare Friel. Hannah Shiels who gave a very good account of herself on Saturday added another point three minutes later to reduce the gap to four. Fanad needed some inspiration and it duly arrived from Michelle Mc Devitt. She hit two points in the space of two minutes to get Gaeil Fhánada right back into proceedings. Both were from difficult angles and showcased Michelle at her best. Scotstown however showed their experience from that point on and slowed the game at every opportunity. That coupled with poor Fanad decision making on the ball and poor Scotstown shooting meant there wasn’t a score for fourteen minutes. That came courtesy of a Scotstown free after a technical foul was called on a Fanad kick out. Both teams were caught out by the more stringent interpretation of the technical rules throughout the game, Fanad benefiting from a similar incident in the first half. Hannah Shiels responded with a free in the twenty ninth minute but there was still time remaining with all the stoppages which happened during the second half. Lauren Carr pointed a free two minutes later and with that a frantic effort ensued for possession. The ball was turned over by both teams but deep in stoppage time Fanad ventured forward once more. A couple of scrambles ensued and a foul was spotted at the referee awarded a free in. Remarkably Lauren Carr held her nerve and slotted the ball over the bar in the thirty seventh minute of the second half. There were great scenes along the sideline as the ladies forced extra time.

Scotstown began extra time well and with the help of the breeze moved into a three point lead once more. Fanad ventured forward and kicked an important score from Maggie Friel with the final play of the first period of extra time to reduce the gap to two points.

Fanad needed a response but it just didn’t happen. The girls battled for every ball but were dispossessed in the final third on too many occasions and couldn’t get their scoring opportunities away. Scotstown added two further points to all but seal the victory but there was another twist. Michelle Doherty pushed on and Aisling Howe moved into the full forward line causing bother. Maggie Friel launched a ball into the edge of the parallelogram which was picked up by Lauren Car who turned and blasted into the roof of the net. There was another chance! Michelle Mc Devitt did fantastic work under pressure to keep possession and was eventually awarded a free for a push on the back. The ladies tried to work it short but the ball was intercepted and with that the final whistle blew.

On reflection the ladies will look back on what might have been but they put in a fantastic battling performance, coming back from the dead at the end of normal time and almost repeating the trick in extra time. Lauren Carr was scorer in chief on the day, while Hannah Shiels was also prominent. Michelle Mc Devitt was excellent while Maggie Friel and Aisling Howe also put in big shifts for the Gaels. Although there was disappointment with the result, great credit must go to the ladies for their battling performance and never say die attitude. John Mc Conigley and Hughie Shiels also deserve huge praise for their commitment over the course of the year and what they’ve achieved with this team. They have a couple of league games to play before the season comes to its conclusion. We wish Scotstown all the best as the move into the next round of the Ulster Championship.

It was a wonderful occasion for the club to be able to host such an event and we’d like to offer our thanks to everyone who helped out in the build up and on the da itself. It was a great club effort and will be a special day to reflect upon in years to come.
