The Late John Thompson The community around Garvagh were shocked at the sudden death of a popular young man John Thompson in St. Paul Minnesota just prior to Christmas. He had been seven years in the USA where he worked in the building trade and was to be married to his American girlfriend Jane in the summer. His parents John and Angela along with other family members on hearing of his illness dashed to St. Paul but sadly he had passed away when they arrived. With a small Irish community in St. Paul the family spent four days in hotel rooms making arrangements to have the remains flown home. Frank O'Kane a Glenullin man living in Chicago proved to be of great assistance and with his help the body was flown home much quicker than expected. John was a keen sportsman having played Gaelic football with Ballerin at juvenile level and Glenullin in the adult grade. He was a natural sportsman and excelled at golf, darts, snooker and pool. He was also a former member of the Errigal Boxing club. His father John is one of Garvagh's best known citizens and is noted for his historic videos of the local land.
