Champions Ballinderry are out of the SFC race

October 02, 2007
There was a sensational result in the Derry SFC semi-final on Sunday last, 30th of September when reigning champions Ballinderry were defeated by a Paddy Bradley inspired Glenullin side on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-8. This win sees the Glenullin back in a county senior football final for the first time since 1985, and on this performance they will be very hard to beat. The Glenullin side dominated this semi-final clash from start to finish and with Rory Boylan and Neal Mullan in outstanding form in the midfield sector the foundation was laid for their success. The Glenullin side started the game in whirlwind fashion and after seven minutes play they were ahead by 1-4 apiece. To the credit of the Ballinderry side they fought back strongly in the second quarter and at the break they were very much in the game trailing by 1-4 to 0-4. Ballinderry started the second-half well with an early Colin Devlin point, and the same player had a chance of a goal minutes later but shot wide with a goal for the taking. This let-off seemed to regalvanise the Glenullin side and they upped their performance all over the field to run out convincing winners at the end. Once again Derry full-forward was the key man for the Glenullin side. He was always in the thick of the action, hitting ten points in what was a performance of sheer class. Ten minutes from full-time Ballinderry's Michael McIver and Glenullin's Donal McNicholl were sent off after two yellow card offences - but overall it was a very sporting contest. This semi-final win for the Glenullin side sets up an intriguing county final between themselves and Bellaghy in the coming weeks. It has the potential of being a real thriller, as Bellaghy have a great record down the years in county finals, and are always hard to beat. However, in saying that if Glenullin produce another team performance akin to this semi-final victory it will take a talented side to deny them success this season. Scorers for Glenullin were - Paddy Bradley 0-10, four frees; C. Bradley 1-0, E. Bradley, Rory Boylan and D. Boylan 0-1 apiece. Ballinderry scorers were - Colin Devlin 0-3, 2 frees; C. Gilligan and Enda Muldoon 0-2 each; S. Rocks and J. Conway 0-1 each.
