Slaughtneil (Derry) 0-11
Cavan Gaels (Cavan) 0-9
Slaughtneil edged out Cavan Gaels, despite only scoring twice in the second half of their Ulster club SFC quarter-final at Owenbeg.
The Derry champions progressed to a last-four meeting with Clontibret after Seanie Johnston had, inexplicably, missed a 30-metre free to draw the game with seven minutes remaining. Following that let-off, the locals went down the field to score the insurance point through Gerald Bradley.
Slaughtneil laid the foundations for their win in the opening half when five Paul Bradley points helped them to a 0-9 to 0-4 interval lead, with Johnston accounting for all but one of the visitors' first half tally.
With Patsy Bradley lording it at midfield, the winners led by 0-3 to 0-1 after eight minutes with Se McGuigan, Paul Bradley and Christopher Bradley all on target. Two Johnston efforts left the minimum in it before Paul Bradley's second point gave Slaughtneil a 0-4 to 0-2 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
But three more Paul Bradley points and another from Christopher Bradley had Slaughtneil in a strong position at the break.
Peter Canavan's Cavan town outfit gradually reduced the deficit in the second half with scores from Johnston and it was a one-point game, 0-9 to 0-10, when the former Cavan and Kildare star missed the chance to restore parity.
After that, it was left to Bradley to settle it.
