Raymond Wilkinson will miss Derry's championship campaign after sustaining a serious knee injury in last Sunday's Allianz Football League Division 2 final against Westmeath.

The corner forward was treated on the pitch for several minutes before being stretchered off after falling awkwardly during the second half of the Croke Park encounter.

"I'm gutted for Raymond and for ourselves that he has suffered a serious knee injury," Derry manager Brian McIver said in the Irish News.

"At the minute, our information is that he has a partial cruciate tear with lateral ligament and possibly cartilage damage. He will see a specialist tomorrow and we'll have a better idea of remedial action at that point."

McIver is backing the Ballinderry clubman to bounce back from this setback.

"Raymond is a fantastic character to have around the squad, particularly within the young squad which we have been working with. He has helped bring them on. He's an experienced player and has been playing really well this year.

"It was typical of the way Raymond plays that he picked up the injury contesting a ball which most others probably wouldn't have. That same level of commitment will see him back for club and county. I have no doubt."
