A tribute to Anthony McSwiggan

Gaels across Derry united in mourning last week after the sad passing of well known Desertmartin man Anthony McSwiggan.

Former Derry County Committee Vice Chairman Anthony was laid to rest in his native Desertmartin after Requiem Mass last Tuesday and the huge attendance at his funeral representative the high esteem in which he was held in the local and wider community in the Oak Leaf County. Anthony was in regular contact with the local photographers to ensure he maximised the coverage of his sponsors and was widely recognised around all grounds in the county as the man with the banner.

He worked tirelessly to ensure that every competition and every county team in the Oakleaf County was sponsored. Anthony was a proud and surprised worthy winner of the An Curadh Mhir award at this year's Derry presentation dinner and this award was a fitting recognition of his outstanding service to the GAA in Derry. County chairman John Keenan paid attributed to his former colleague: "Anthony McSwiggan will be missed among his many friends throughout this Island in the various circles he was so actively involved in. he was so comfortable in everyone's company from the President down and he has left a massive void in all our lives but non more so, than Patricia his devoted wife and companion of over 50 years. "On behalf of all the Gaels of this County I would like to offer our sincere condolences to Patricia and indeed the wider family circle.

Anthony will no doubt go down in folklore as an absolute legend in his own right, we are all so fortunate to have known him and there is no doubt he has made a massive impact in all our lives and we will all miss his craic" Anthony McSwiggan's legacy will continue throughout Derry for many years to come and for those of us who had regular contact with him, he will continue to be sorely missed.
