Ulster Senior Football League
The senior team kicked off their season with their first game in the Ulster League with Magherafelt making the short journey to Watty Park. The competition seems like an ideal place to give fringe players their opportunity and indeed the Glen management took that option to have a look at a few. Our lads were slow out of the blocks however and Magherafelt raced into a 1-03 to 0-01 lead. That first Glen score came in the 23'rd minute with Dee Maguire gathering the ball and jinking his way through the Magherafelt rearguard and popping over the bar from 25 yards. The resulting kick out from that score was fielded by Connlan Bradley and he worked with Gribby to get the ball to Seanny McGroggan who fired it over the bar. With the Watty's now fully wakened a high ball was floated in around the house by the busy Dee Maguire and full forward Donal Leahy jumped above four or five other men and got his first to the ball and punched to the net for his first goal of the 2012 campaign. The half time score was Glen 1-02 Magherafelt 1-03. With Glen only really playing for ten minutes in the first half surely a better second half was in store. A strong bench for the first game of the season meant the lads on the bench had to up their game. With the second half underway if was Magherafelt who extended their lead to two points with a point from a free kick. Kevin Bryson replaced Canadian import Sean 'Shaggy' Convery, who wanted to get home early to watch the Superbowl final. Bryson's impact was immediate and he ventured up field with ball in hand and after a nasty shove in the back he was awarded a free which he fired over the bar himself to leave the minimum between the sides. In the next five minutes Glen were in the ascendency but couldn't make it count as they missed several chances for scores including clear cut goal chances. Any Magherafelt attacks were snuffed out by an excellent debut performance by corner back Brendan 'Giggles' O'Kane and a few hopeful balls lumped in on top of our debutant keeper were comfortably dealt with by Ciaran 'Kiwi' McCloy with Salthill resident Philly O'Connell and Deccy Brolly helping out when required. Seanny McGroggan was involved in a counter attacking move, playing the ball out of defence, and taking off to on a supporting run which led to him duly receiving the ball back and he then raced into the Magherafelt defence and popped the ball over the bar with his left boot (who knew he even had one) for his second score off the day, and the equaliser. Dee Maguire went on a solo run and after throwing his man a 'dummy' he found space 40 yards out from goal and thumped the ball well over the bar for an excellent score - keeping our club men busy out on the main road! Our lads now were one point up in the game and sensing victory. Our captain (for the day I hope) Sean Peter Gribbon then worked himself into a great position and found himself in front of goal with the ball to leave him with the easiest of finishes for a goal, and he duly obliged for a change. Magherafelt got on the score sheet again with another point from a free kick. Mickey Culbert and Gary McGill decided to make a raft of changes which seen Ciaran McFaul replace Connlan Bradley, Ryan Winton replacing Donal Leahy to add a bit of physical strength to the forward line, and Jim Glasgow replacing Dee Maguire. Connlan Bradley had to re enter the fray with Johnny Bradley carrying a leg injury. Johnny Glass also replaced Tommy Mc Cloy. Magherafelt then had a man sent of for a second yellow card after a high tackle on McFaul. McFaul then got on the ball after a flowing move involving five or six Watty players and he didn't disappoint when he fired over the bar from 30 yards out on the right wing for the final score of the game. Final Score: Glen 2-06 Magherafelt 1-05. Team & Scorers: Ciaran McCloy, Brendan O'Kane, Sean Convery, Deccy Brolly, Odhran Bradley, Philly O'Connell, Dee Maguire (0-02), Johnny Bradley, Joe Bradley, Seanny McGroggan (0-02), Sean Gribbon (1-00), Tommy McCloy, Mark O'Donnell, Donal Leahy (1-00), Connlan Bradley. Subs used: Kevin Bryson (0-01) for Sean Convery, Ciaran McFaul (0-01) for Connlan Bradley, Ryan Winton for Donal Leahy, Jim Glasgow for Dee Maguire, Connlan Bradley for Johnny Bradley, Johnny Bottles for Tommy McCloy. A good second half performance with a number of the younger lads showing they aren't there to make up numbers, a good battle for places in store this year, which can only help the team. They travel to Donaghmore next Sunday for their second game with throw in at 2pm. Any support would be appreciated - let's start as we mean to go on.
