The provisional date for this game is early August however this will of course be dependant on Derry's progress in the Qualifiers. Keep an eye on the Watty Website and press for confirmation of date, time and venue.

Senior Football League

Our senior team hosted Castledawson on Sunday 10 July with the game being the proverbial four pointer as both teams were trying to make their way out of the bottom of the league table. Aodhan McGrath took up the number one jersey for the day with Sean Gribbon serving an unfortunate suspension. Glen started off with real intent and in the first minute of the game captain marvel John McCambley played a great ball into Connlan Bradley in the full forward position who turned his man and blasted to the Dawson net. Despite a few more Glen chances it was Dawson who got the next two points of the game, both from play. The red hot Emmet Bradley then extended Glen's lead to two points after a ball from Deccy Brolly was broken into Emmet's path by Dee Maguire. Mark O'Donnell got himself of the score sheet in the thirteenth minute when a lay off by Dee again found him a shooting position and he made no mistake to split the posts. A minute late Emmet scored Glen's second major of the day when a fist pass from Yogi set him up perfectly to dispatch to the net. Dawson then got their third and fourth points of the game when they dispatched a 45 and got another form play following some slack marking by the Glen defence. Ciaran McFaul had to be replaced by Ryan Winton when a troublesome foot injury caused him problems and he had to retire. McCamley scored his first off the day when after a good solo run from i lar na phairce he fisted (threw) the ball over the bar. Glen got their third goal off the day when a fist pass from Ryan Winton found Yogi bearing down on goal and he dispatched to the net with the help of a deflection of one of the Dawson defenders. Two minutes later Dawson were awarded a penalty after Deccy Brolly sumo wrestled a Dawson attacker. Dawson made no mistake from the spot to score their first goal. The in form Mutt Mutt then scored the last two points of the half, one from play after a great solo run and the other from a 45. Half Time score was Glen 3-05 Castledawson 1-04. Straight from the second half throw in Dawson had a good goal chance to cut the deficit however a superb block by Deccy Brolly kept them at bay. Two minutes later spice boy Connlan Bradley got his second goal of the day after once again beating his marker to blast to the net with Glen now leading by ten points. Connlan was involved once again when he won a free kick which was slotted between the posts by brother Emmet. Emmet also scored a 14yd free kick seven minutes later as Glen continued to be ruthless. Again Dawson had a good goal chance but this time it was Philly O'Connell's turn to throw himself at the feet of the Dawson attacker for a superb block to deny the shot. Dawson then scored four points on the bounce, three from fee kicks and one from play as they tried to edge back into the game. Emmet stemmed the tide when he scored a great point from a tight angle in the forty ninth minute of the game. Glen then introduced fresh legs in the form of Michael Warnock for Dee Maguire. Donal Leahy set up Connlan Bradley for his first point of the day. Jim 'angry man' Glasgow then entered the fray in place of Conor Carville. Dawson got the next point of the game when the referee awarded a free kick after McCamley was caught playing with a man's ear! Ryan Bradley replaced Donal Leahy in the fifty fifth minute and two minutes later he got himself a point after a soccer pass from Yogi found him unmarked on the twenty metre line. Dawson responded with a point of their own a minute later. McCamley then got his second point off the day when after a great solo run he miss hit a shot and it flew over the bar somehow. Glen had taken their foot off the gas as the final whistle approached and allowed Dawson to score an easy goal much to the anger of Mickey Culbert. However Glen responded immediately and Twilight scored his hat trick when he once again found the net on the stroke of full time to leave the full time score Glen 5-11 Castledawson 2-10. Team & Scorers: A McGrath, C Carville, P O'Connell, D Brolly, O Bradley, Joe Bradley, R Dougan, J McCamley (0-02), J Bradley, D Maguire, D Leahy, C McFaul, E Bradley (1-06), C Bradley (3-01), M O'Donnell (1-01). Minor Football League

The minor team travelled to Slaughtneil last Monday night (11 July) seeking a win in order to wrap up the minor league title for this season. Glen were missing a number of regulars entering into this game, with injuries the order of the day however the lads that came in were determined to show what they could do - and they did so! Slaughtneil roared out of the blocks and in the very first minute they had hit the back of the Glen net when they dispatched a rebound after their initial shot had been blocked. It was fully six minutes before the next score off the game when the captain Emmet Bradley scored from a free kick. A minute later Michael Warnock got his first point of the day off his weaker foot following a good ball in by Ryan Dougan. Glen were in the ascendency now and scored their first major of the day when Emmet launched a ball into the edge of the square and Conor Convery won possession and blasted to the net to give Glen a two point lead. Gavin O'Connor then got himself on the score sheet with a point from play. Slaughtneil to their credit kept trying and in the fourteenth minute they scored a point from play which was quickly followed by their second goal of the game after poor defending by the Glen defence. Slaughtneil now led by one point. Two minutes later Conor Convery took a great score from way out on the right hand side to tie the scores. Five minutes later Slaughtneil restored their lead with a score from a free kick. However Glen finished the half stronger with a point from Spike after a lay off by Conor Convery, and a point from Emmet after he took a short free to Danny Tallon who gave the return ball for Emmet to dispatch between the sticks. Half time score was Slaughtneil 2-02 Glen 1-06. The home side levelled the scores a minute into the second half with a point from a free kick. Glen scored another point from play after a good catch in midfield by Emmet who fed Dougy and he passed to Spike to score. Cathal Mulholland scored a very good point after a great solo run took him past defenders and had time to settle himself to score. The in form Spike then scored a free kick from fully 45 yards which was quickly followed by a point from play from Dougy after a fist pass from midfield partner Emmet to leave Glen four points to the good. Slaughtneil scored their second point of the half from a free kick in the thirty first minute. This was cancelled out with a free kick from Emmet after the Glen defence had overturned the ball to start a Glen attack. Slaughtneil then scored a point from play with just three between the sides ten minutes into the second half. Spike once again scored another point from play after an overturned ball in midfield led to Paul Gunning receiving a pass and he laid in the on rushing Spike. Two minutes later the same player scored again after more good work by Paul Gunning. Slaughtneil responded with another point from play to leave a four point margin but this was to be their last for some time as Glen really grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. The start of this purple patch was when Cathal Mulholland scored his second point off the day after a trademark run forward from half back. Brendan O'Kane then also got himself on the score sheet after roving forward from centre half back to dispatch between the Slaughtneil uprights. Thomas Convery gained possession of the ball in the forty second minute and he fisted the ball to the over lapping Paul Gunning who made no mistake and he coolly finished to the back of the net. Spike scored his seventh point of the day after a good solo run a minute after the goal. Slaughtneil tried to get themselves back into they game however they were denied a goal after an outstanding save by Ciaran McCloy in the Glen goal's with the defence sniffing out any chance of Slaughtneil picking up the rebound. This was followed with a great point from play by Conor Convery and another from Ryan Dougan (must be the new haircut that has improved his feet) to leave twelve points between the sides with three minutes to play. Slaughtneil then scored their fifth and sixth points of the second half however it was Thomas Convery who got the last score off the day with a good point from play to leave Glen victors by a total of eleven points. Full time score was Slaughtneil 2-08 Glen 2-19. Team & Scorers: C McCloy, C McCabe, C Gallagher, O Hegarty, C Mulholland (0-02), B O'Kane (0-01), O Glass, E Bradley (0-03), R Dougan (0-02), T Convery (0-01), M Warnock (0-07), G O'Connor (0-01), P Gunning (1-00), C Convery (1-02), D Tallon. U16 Football League Play-offs

The u16's took on Dungiven on Thursday 7 July away from home in their first league playoff game. Following a determined and clinical display by our lads they emerged victorious on a scoreline of Dungiven 1-01 Glen 5-13.

With that good start to the play-offs under their belts the lads travelled to Slaughtneil last Thursday night in a confident mood seeking to gain a foothold in the play-offs and leave themselves in pole position to win the league. They duly obliged when after a blistering first half when they led by 1-04 to 0-00 at half time. Slaughtneil as expected piled on the pressure in the second half however Glen hung on to win by the minimum. Final Score was Glen 2-05 Slaughtneil 1-07. Scorers: Mark Doole (1-01), Conor Convery (1-01), Stevie O'Hara (0-02), Cathair Glass (0-01). We would like to wish the two Slaughtneil players who received serious injuries on the night a speedy recovery.

U14 Football Championship

Derry Camogie Championship

The first round / quarter finals of the Derry Camogie Championship took place for Glen on Sunday 10 July when they travelled to Bellaghy to take on a good Dungiven side which had beaten Glen earlier in the season in the League. Despite a slow start when Glen went five points behind in the first fifteen minutes they went in level at halftime with the scores 1-04 each. Early on in the second half Glen hit their purple patch scoring 2-02 without reply and went ahead by eight points only for Dungiven to once again find their range and make a fight off it as the final whistle approached. However the Glen girls held on to win on a scoreline of Glen 3-07 Dungiven 3-04. They now progress to the semi final stages. Well done! A few of the girls also excelled themselves in the post match celebrations....I'll say no more! Rumour has it Clare Monaghan is transferring too!!

U16 Derry Camogie Championship

On Saturday 9 July the U16's played host to neighbours Slaughtneil in the quarter final of the championship. This was a tremendous game to watch and each and every girl equipped themselves very well on what proved to be a very enthralling match. Glen started out well with Sinead McDonald having the opening score of the game, to put over a fine point, the this trend continued with both teams tit for tat in what was a close affair with the score at half time score being 1-01 to 1-01. The second half began in a different fashion with Glen gaining the upper hand quite quickly through goals from Edel Talbot and Rachel Glasgow, however this was not to continue. Despite some resilient defending and an excellent display at full back from Hannah Ferguson, Slaughtneil were able to creep back into the game. A keen eye for goal in a well taken low free from Slaughtneil's centre-half back proved to be too much for Glen's back line with the game finishing on a scoreline of 3-02 to 3-04. Possibly if we were able to benefit from a full panel this may have been a different outcome, championship games at holiday times don't always suit everyone unfortunately!!! Team and Scorers: Aimee Glasgow, Laura McKenna, Hannah Ferguson, Jill O'Donnell, Clare McGroggan, Caoimhe Glass, Roisin McCabe, Charlotte Burke, Orla Higgins, Eimear McNicholl (1-00), Sinead McDonald (0-02), Niamh Gallagher, Orla McKenna Edel Talbot (1-00), Rachel Glasgow (1-00) Subs used: Niamh McKenna for Laura McKenna, Mary McIvor & Katie Strathern.

Derry Senior Ladies Championship

The Ladies booked their place in the Derry County Final with a 1-10 to 2-5 win over Ballinascreen on Thursday night. With both teams having lost to Ardtrea in their first games it was winner-takes-all in this game. Glen led 1-05 to 0-03 at the break with Dervla McMaster scoring the Watty girls' major. Glen extended their lead shortly after the resumption but two consecutive points saw Ballinascreen reduce the deficit to four. After a lengthy stoppage due to an injury to Louise Glass, Glen hit the next four points to open up 1-10 to 0-05 lead but two Ballinascreen goals brought them right back into it, but it was too little too late as Glen held out for the victory and set up a clash with Ardtrea in the final on Sunday, August 21. Attention now turns back to their league campaign. Glen remains unbeaten after a draw with Ballinascreen, followed by wins over Dungiven and Craigbane.
