Derry SHC: Lavey dethrone holders
August 23, 2010
In one of the first county finals of the year, Lavey upset the odds when they denied Kevin Lynch's a five-in-a-row of Derry SHC titles at Celtic Park yesterday.
Lavey 3-10
Kevin Lynch's (Dungiven) 0-11
Despite being bottom of the Derry league, Lavey took the game to the champions from the off and were full value for what was their first county title win since 2002. They got off to a brilliant start when Ben Dodds netted inside 30 seconds and a second goal from a Paddy Henry free in the 10th minute put them firmly in the driving seat.
The Dungiven men had the wait until the 13th minute for Conal McCloskey to open their account. Ciaran Herron landed three successive long-range frees to close the gap, but Paddy Henry's free-taking ensured Lavey of a 2-5 to 0-6 lead at the interval.
With Fergal McGuigan to the fore, Kevin Lynch's had the margin down to three, 2-6 to 0-9, before a third Lavey goal from Colm Murphy in the 39th minute ended their comeback hopes.
