Derry unlikely to pick external manager

Derry Chairman John Keenan
Derry chairman John Keenan says it is highly unlikely that the executive committee will extend its search for a new football manager beyond the six individuals who have been nominated for the job.

Earlier this week, Laois appointed former Armagh full back Justin McNulty as their new manager, even though he hadn't been nominated by the clubs. However, the next Oak Leaf supremo looks set to certain from a shortlist of John Brennan, Damien Barton, Tony Scullion, Malachy O'Rourke, Liam Bradley and Peter Doherty.

"Our first strand in the process was to allow the clubs to have their input," Keenan told the Irish News.

"In step two, other candidates might come into the reckoning, but I wouldn't imagine so.

"I am delighted with the calibre of those candidates. I am personally delighted that so much interest has been shown in the job. I have a very good feeling that we have potential in this county. I don't think we are in as bad a place as other people think."
