Brennan interested in Derry job

August 04, 2010
John Brennan has confirmed his interest in the vacant Derry football manager's post, but isn't prepared to go through another interview process.

The Lavey man is one of the favourites to replace Damian Cassidy, who tendered his resignation last week, but he is not prepared to attend any more interviews, having been overlooked on two previous occasions.

"The only serious time I went for the Derry job was five years ago when I was beaten on a 9-8 vote," he said in the Irish News.

"The last time I went was because I was nominated, but I knew they weren't interested in me and that I had no chance of getting the job.

"The people concerned know where I live. They have my contact number. I will speak to anyone, but it is not my intention to travel to Dungiven (for an interview) for a third time."

Brennan, who is currently managing Lavey alongside his nephew and 1993 All-Ireland winning captain Henry Downey, is recognised as one of the most successful managers in Ulster club football, having won county championships with Lavey, Slaughtneil and Loup in Derry, Cargin in Antrim and Carrickmore in Tyrone.

Brennan could face competition from Malachy O'Rourke, who has emerged as a surprise candidate just weeks after stepping down as Fermanagh boss. O'Rourke guided Loup to county and Ulster championship successes in 2003 and had former Derry star Johnny McBride as one of his selectors in Fermanagh this year.
