Football League heads into crucial phase

March 04, 2010
It's Round 3 weekend in the top three Divisions of the Allianz GAA National football League while Round 4 is on the agenda in Division 4.

Three football and one hurling game will be screened on TV as follows:
Saturday: Allianz Football League: Cork v Galway (7.30); Setanta Ireland (live).
Sunday: ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Kerry v Derry (2.30); TG4 (live); Monaghan v Tyrone (2.30); TG4 (deferred); NHL: Tipperary v Kilkenny (2.30); Setanta Ireland (live).

DIVISION 1: DUBLIN, MAYO, CORK SET EARLY PACE
Saturday (7.30): Cork v Galway, Pairc Ui Rinn.
Sunday (2.30): Mayo v Dublin, Castlebar; Kerry v Derry, Tralee; Monaghan v Tyrone, Inniskeen.
Six points is usually enough to avoid relegation so with Dublin and Mayo both on four points after two games, the winners of the clash in Castlebar will probably have achieved their first target for the year. After that, the ambition will be to move on and challenge for a place in the ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE final. Dublin and Mayo drew (0-9 each) in last year's League.
Cork have also won their first two games and will have home advantage against Galway in Saturday's night's televised clash. Galway lost to Mayo in the first round but got back on track with a win over Monaghan who, together with Kerry and Tyrone, have lost their first two games.
Monaghan host Tyrone in all-ticket game at Inniskeen on Sunday. It's a crucial game for both as the losers will be deep in relegation trouble. Ironically, Monaghan are the Division's highest scorers (4-26 in two games) but also have the worst defensive record, having conceded a total of 4-33 against Cork and Galway.
It's unusual to see Kerry pointless after two games which makes their clash with Derry in Tralee all the more interesting. The counties clashed in each of the last two League finals with Derry winning in 2008 while Kerry prevailed last year. Derry beat Tyrone in the first round this year before losing to Dublin while Kerry have lost to Dublin and Cork.

DIVISION 2: ULSTER DUO LEAD THE PROMOTION RACE
Saturday (7.30): Laois v Armagh, Portlaoise; Down v Tipperary, Newry; Meath v Westmeath, Pairc Tailteann.
Sunday (2.30): Kildare v Donegal, Newbridge.
Ulster pair, Donegal and Down are the only teams on full points after two games while Westmeath and Tipperary are the only two who are yet to pick up a point. Armagh, Kildare, Meath and Laois in the middle block with one win each from two games.
Down will be at home to Tipperary in Newry on Saturday night and while they will start favourites, they will be mindful of last year's Division 3 final which Tipp won by a point after extra-time.
Donegal face a tough 'away' assignment against Kildare in Newbridge while Westmeath also face a demanding task against Meath in Navan. Meath easily beat Westmeath in last year's All-Ireland qualifiers and will be confident of maintaining their dominance over their near neighbours. Westmeath, who were relegated from Division 1 last year, have dropped to the bottom of Division 2 after two games, having conceded 3-32 in defeats by Donegal and Armagh in the first two games.
Laois beat Armagh in last year's League and will be hoping to repeat that success in Portlaoise on Saturday night. Laois were hammered by Donegal in the last round while Armagh were comfortable winners over Westmeath.

DIVISION 3: ANTRIM BUILD EARLY MOMENTUM
Saturday (7.30): Antrim v Fermanagh, Casement Park.
Sunday (2.30); Wexford v Sligo, Wexford Park; Offaly v Roscommon, Tullamore; Louth v Cavan, Drogheda.
Antrim are the only county on full points after two games and will have home advantage in their quest for a third win when they host Fermanagh on Saturday night. Fermanagh picked up their first points with a late win over Roscommon last time out.
Roscommon are the only county in the group without a point so far as they head for Tullamore to take on Offaly who have won one of two. Wexford, who dropped down from Division 2 last year meet Sligo, who were promoted from Division 4 while Louth and Cavan, both of whom are on two points, meet in Drogheda.

DIVISION 4: CARLOW-WICKLOW IN CHAMPIONSHIP REHEARSAL
Sunday (2.30 unless stated); Waterford v Longford, Dungarvan; Wicklow v Carlow, Aughrim; Clare v Leitrim, Ennis; Kilkenny v London, Nowlan Park (1.0)
Leaders, Limerick, who have six points from three games, won't be in action this weekend, giving second place Waterford (5pts) a chance to go top when they host Longford in Dungarvan.
Longford have yet to pick up a point, leaving them in the bottom three with London and Kilkenny.
The clash of Wicklow and Carlow in Aughrim will be of particular interest as they are due to meet again in the Leinster championship on May 16. Clare, who have won their first two games, host Leitrim while Kilkenny take on London in Nowlan Park.
