Martin McHugh puts Derry’s demise down to a lack of commitment rather than a lack of talent.

The once-mighty Oak Leafers arrested their recent slide by winning an Allianz League Division 4 title this spring, but they will still go into today’s Ulster SFC preliminary round clash with Tyrone as rank outsiders.

"The level that they need to get to requires a big, big commitment," former Donegal All-Ireland winner McHugh told BBC Radio Ulster.

"I think the problem is with the Derry players. They don't seem to be prepared to put in the same commitment and effort the likes of the Tyrones, Monaghans and Donegals do.

"If they are not going to do that, they are never going to get to the level they need to get to."

He added: “They need to put up a good performance against Tyrone. But they are up probably against one of the top three or four teams in the country."
