Replying To letsgetgoing:  "Did not think there was much between the teams on Sunday if Roscommon had taken their scores like Mayo. Accurate score taking was one of the strengths of Roscommon teams in previous years.
Neither are not going to win the All Ireland but it is interesting to see that Mayo are now 12-1 and Roscommon are 150-1.
Mayo are also favourites for the Connacht final."
You can't really argue with them odds. We have never won a quarter final and we couldn't make it last year with arguably a Better team than this year. Mayo aren't the team they used to be but made it to an all Ireland final during Covid when everyone all that year said they were in transition. Mayo seem to have a totally different mentality to us. If we get to last 8 this year I will be shocked unless we get a bit of luck with our group and then a decent draw for playoff. We will get nowhere playing decent for 55 minutes.

Replying To MachaireConnacht:  "The disappointing thing about the defeats is it's hard to see where the improvements are or where we are developing. Bad enough our defending doesn't seem to be improving but our attacking play is also suffering. I'm clinging on to the hope that maybe they are putting all their stock into going hell for leather in the group stages and to make a QF. Is it possible to be playing a low intensity, containment game so far to try and save themselves for later.

A big difference in the goalkeeper out of the goal scenario between Ros and Donegal was you can bet McGuinness had them repeating that scenario over and over again in training to the point that the final kicker finds the net each time with great confidence and calmness. When it happened to us there was a bit of panic and lack of confidence to take on the shot and then the chance went."
No we aren't putting everything into all Ireland series.. winning Connacht was a possibility for us and would have given us a better chance at making last 8 than the situation we are in now. We went all out to beat mayo and that was shown by starting Ben .

I went in hard on Davy Burke a while back and I still see no reason to change what I said. Not sure what the level is for Roscommon but they are at nothing with him in charge. I think he lost the dressing room a while back.

Replying To yew_tree:  "Not that interesting regarding the bookie odds. Mayo wont be winning Sam but we have a habit of getting to finals…bookies cover themselves. We can take a contender out on a good day but don't have the consistency or team to compete at present. Roscommon have not been in a final for decades."
Yes Roscommon last in a senior final in 1980. Last in a senior semi final in 1991.Roscommon's Last senior championship win in Croke park 1980. A dreadful record for a proud traditional gaa county like Roscommon. Mayo have reached 11 senior finals since 1989 losing all of them. A terrible record in finals but as you say Mayo are good at reaching them. Last Connacht team's All Ireland win was 23 years ago( Galway 2001). Too long ago for our province and hard to see that changing this year.

I think players liked the set up last year and then two good coaches walked away and were replaced by club standard coaches and that would destroy anyone's belief in what was happening. I think burke is a good lad and good manager but probably not a great peoples person. He's supposed to get as stubborn as an ass and you can't be like that managing 40 young lads

Personally I think The team have too many scars from bad defeats over the last few years - had we got over the line against Clare a couple of years back the potential to get to an AI final that year was unreal -
Under mcstay had we managed to beat Mayo that first day in croke park think of the belief that would've instilled and last year the defeats to Kildare and then cork were hard to stomach
Same core group of players over the years different managers that we as supporters feel haven't got the best out of them or maybe they have who knows
A good psychologist maybe is what's needed and go out and play like they believe In Them selves for the AI series ! They've nothing to lose now at this stage !

First year usually easiest for a new coach. Players buy into everything but Burke is not shy of a microphone and a soundbite. He picks the coaches so it's all on him.

He has to pick from who's available and who the Co Board can afford.
Cunningham's last year saw him picking some downmarket coaches too.
Unlike some better heeled Counties no Rochford, Buckley etc etc for us !.
We got new manager bounce in 17, 19 and 23 and then slipped for the rest of the managerial regimes.

He won't be there next year anyway. I doubt it.

Difference in resources netween counties one of the big reasons why such a gap opens up between counties from the likes of minor/u20 to senior.

On watching back the game a few things stood out.
A fairly good first half apart from the O'Shea goal. It looked bad from the stand but even worse on telly. Criminal to let a man run through that easily, it was like watching a lad from minor join an u14 session.
D Murray was a huge loss.
Very good around the middle of the field considering our issues there.
A big frustration in the second half was what seemed to be a real lack of movement up front when we got into good attacking positions.
Big difference in how Mayo defended in the second half and our defending. They defended solidly with intensity and forced us into taking shots from long range. Meanwhile we didn't seem to use our bodies back with the same effiency when we were defending and they got into much better and easier scoring positions.
I know it easier said than done when you are not the person out on the field. But there were occassions where we handpassed 3 or 4 passes in what could have been done with a good quick kick pass (Fitzmaurice even commented on this on one occassion). Or where a man was in a good position in space but no one looks up to see if the kick pass is on and instead they opt for the hand pass to the nearest man. D Murtaghs brilliant ball to Enda for his goal attempt was a great example of how effective it can be...but there were easier kick passing opportunities on other ocassions which we didn't seem to see or just didn't want to try them.

Looking at the positives, there are parts of that performance which were good but there needs to be improvement. How do we keep slumping in second halves? Great that Ben O'Carroll is back and looks like he is really up for it. Hopefully Harney's injury isn't as bad as it seems as he is a great addition back. E McCormacks direct running is invaluable but we need a few more who can do the same. C Carroll still very steady and impressive with his distribution.

Three matches at least to go in the senior championship. Not a great start but it is only fair for definitive judgements on all involved at the end of the campaign.
Advice and maybe even a little bit of encouragement for how the team could improve is ok but continuous and sometimes historical negative comments is draining and demotivational. It might even make one or two additional players consider their options next year.
We certainly don't want to become like the Galway forum where many posters seem to know it all! (Several amature players and management who have given their all for years taken to bits on a regular basis by guys who were probably subs on the junior team and never saw a gym in their lives). All county players put in serious work and deserve to be respected, treated well (win, lose or draw) in ALL counties. The vast majority of Roscommon supporters are generally reasonable and fair from my experience. They know like Monaghan supporters, that we have limited playing and financial resources and have been punching above our weight for many years.

Hopefully we can find the odd knock-out punch before the year is out.

Good post MachaireConnacht. Great to read about some positives for a change and suggestions for improvement.

Support tends to be fickle and as the saying goes a slap on the back is only six inches from a kick in the ****.

I've noticed a lot of the new generation of supporters talk about their GAA team like they talking about some multi millionaire and professional/pampered sports team across the water. GAA has been built respect which is why supporters can continue to mingle together in the stand or terrace at matches.

Yes we don't have the money and resources of top six or so counties but regardless to how this or any year goes one shouldn't underestimate the commitment, hard work and loyalty these players give to the Roscommon jersey.

They've given it that alright, over 10 years by a good few.
I wonder will many or any of
Lavin, Murray, Niall Daly, Diarmuid, the Smiths or Hussey give it another year.
Ciaráin or Conor Daly unlikely to return.

I don't think anyone here is questioning the commitment of any Roscommon players to the cause. I think everyone knows the huge sacrifices involved. I think that people here are just genuinely disappointed with the commitment that was shown on the field v Mayo last Sunday. I think people know deep down that it was baffling when compared to a wholesome full on committed performance in Castlebar last year brought the victory.
Just a few observations. Weather was brilliant and pitch and surrounds looked excellent so we were also disappointed with the manner of the defeat.
Did we lay a hand on Mayo players or hit fairly and hard within the rules. I honestly think we were very poor in that regard which questions the on field commitment to the cause. Hurson the ref I hear said it was one of the easiest fame he ever reffed. Did he have to tick or book anyone. I'm open to correction but for both teams won't go far if they are playing at that intensity going forward. Roscommons DNA is of tougher stuff than witnessed last Sunday and I'm not taking a shot at players or management. That unfortunately was the reality.

Will be a Roscommon v Galway U20 final. Galway very impressive with how they beat Sligo tonight, we'll need to make sure we are a lot more competitive and not allow the game as contest to be over after 15 minutes as Sligo did tonight.

A first time poster here so a little nervous. I have been following Hogan Stand over the last few years and I just want to thank all those who have shared their insights and knowledge on this page, it's something that as a Roscommon GAA fan I enjoy. Like most other Rossies at the moment I am disappointed with the way the season has gone so far. I do appreciate my disappointment is nothing compared to that of the players and management team but I do want to make a point or two. Firstly Roscommon is a small county with limited resources but we constantly strive to punch above our weight. That is something we should be proud off and something we should never change. It's what's makes us Rossies and a constant pain in the neck to our two bigger and whether we like it or not more successful neighbours. Those days when we can savour those victories are the special days in our lives. We are slowly but surely turning the Hyde into a ground to be proud of. It was the envy of a lot of my Mayo friends last week. When you think of Salthill and its access problems or McHale Park and its debt we have something special. Somebody mentioned it lately but a coat of tarmacadem and proper toilet facilities will improve the ground no end. ( could somebody consider turning down or off the blaring pre match music, I don't see its value)
On the pitch our underage teams are going well and hopefully will have big support over the next few weeks. Re the Seniors one point I need to make. I commend Davy Burke for his passion and massive work rate but I don't think things are the same this year as last. Murtagh, Nolan, McKeown are tremendous loses but equally so are Mc Hugh and McGowan on the sideline. Throughout last years league these men tangled on the sideline. They had heated debates and arguments. While Davy stood with the hands out remonstrating against every decision against us Mark Mc Hugh was up and down that line driving us on. To me that added significantly to the way we ended strongly in most of our league matches. I do accept the same men were on the line for the poor championship results but at that maybe other issues were at play including the massive league effort. From the very first league game this year in Omagh that energy has not been evident on the line. Can it be reignited?

Nice complement for the work done in the Hyde by Willie Joe on the Mayo Blog.

Very impressive display by Galway under 20's last night against Mayo. 0-12 to 0-1 up after only 17 minutes and scored 23 points in total. Started like a train and their shooting in the first half was exceptional. Sligo only really started playing when the game was over and got it back to about 8 at full time. However there is a bit of a warrior spirit about this Roscommon team and they certainly won't give the Galway team the same time on the ball as Sligo. A slow start again for the Rossies in the final and we will be under pressure. Now that the pitches have dried out a bit they could probably do with having a training session in Castlebar before the game as Galway have played at least one game there.
Pity the game is clashing with the high profile Leinster v Northhampton game at the same time in Croke Park. Hopefully the team will have good travelling support.
