Reformation- think there's a lot of sense in Sean's post regarding challenge games. You should note Tyrone don't play them, all in house games. However I do agree a bit of momentum from McKenna cup would be good. Even just beating Tyrone would help us mentally.

So Fredflint do you agree with challange games like the McKenna Cup or would you prefer inhouse games?
Or maybe you will just sit on the fence like you usually do.
Another year reading your nonsense

I think Sean is spot on, in house games the only job

We already have in-house games all year round - the league and championship. We are talking about developing a county team. We spend enough time moaning about the poor standard of Cavan football and how our clubs don't go anywhere in the Ulster championship!

So does it not make sense to try out our best lads against the best players in Ulster?

In-house games with lads knowing the heads off each other? There may be some merit to that suggestion in that lads can put down markers in training games and come to the fore but jesus lads, we're trying to win an Ulster football championship not a Ultimate fighter championship!

Best wishes to all teams representing the county during 2017! Hopefully the McKenna Cup will help Mattie unearth some new talent. Best wishes also to all contributors to the forum in 2017 may you all have good health or work your way back to good health during the course of the year!

training games do Kilkenny hurlers and Dublin footballers no harm...

True but look at the standard of player in Kilkenny and Dublin. You could have 2 teams with 8-10 on each side with All Ireland medals.

Hardly apples for apples.

Anyway, of course we will have training games. I think they are an important part of the preparation. My original point was that I saw a merit in the McKenna Cup. Mr O'Rinn disagreed and said we should get out of the McKenna Cup and play within. I saw we need both but definitely the McKenna Cup should be an important part of our PREPARATION. I am not saying more than that.

Why wouldn't we be taking the Mckenna cup seriously as preparation for the league. Tyrone have won it for the last 5 years & it's fair to assume that Micky Harte knows more than anyone on here what's required to have the correct preparation for the league. Enough training sessions to hold squad games during the year. Important we hit the ground running in the Dublin game. Big year ahead but despite the absentee's I am still confident we will survive in div 1

It's a waste of time but you get three matches to try and unearth some fresh talent. Do we need to win it I don't think so for shortly after the final the first round of the national league starts and this is priority above everything first and foremost. Mr Harte is known for saying he wants to win everything well he now has an established team this we have to do first and think for now about one thing and thats staying in Division 1 and until thats secure he can then worry about the Anglo Celt trophy and go from there one match at a time. Yes I am against challenge matches because you learn nothing from them but I am a firm believer in playing against each other hell for leather. Anyway the best of luck to the team for Sunday and hoping for a good entertaining game.

Read my message slowly. Nowhere did I say that we had to win it. I clearly highlighted that we need to use the games as competitive fixtures to be ready for the league. Patience is a virtue!!!

Big difference playing behind closed doors and playing for your county in front of peering and harsh eyes. McKenna Cup is hardly the be all and end all and the games are not exactly sellout but it's still a stepping stone for players into the inter county scene and a big deal for a young lad breaking his duck. Don't see the harm in it myself.

Tyrone (McKenna Cup v Cavan): Niall Morgan; Aidan McCrory, Jonathan Monroe, Ronan McNabb; Michael Cassidy, Tiernan McCann, Niall Sludden; Declan McClure, Padraig McNulty; Darren McCurry, Peter Harte, Cahir McCullagh; Lee Brennan, Connor McAliskey, Ronan O'Neill

No in-house Cavan team will give the new lads a better early test than this lot. End of story.

Normally I'd wouldn't be bothered about the McKenna Cup but this year it gives the new manager a bit of time to get to know the panel. So that has to be a plus regardless whether we win a game or not.

Team posted. A good mix of fresh talent and experienced players. I think our defence looks strong. Does anyone know if Ray Galligan is has left? He's not listed on the panel at all. Given how hard the players worked on kickout strategies with Ray and how successful it became for us, it would be a disaster if we were going into Division 1 with a new keeper.

We don't look strong up front and there's questions about the midfield partnership. It is good to see McDermott back though, bit of a forgotten man but he's always been solid and he's coming into his best years now. Tyrone look very strong on paper and it will be a tough start to the year but Matttie will get a chance to see what the lads are made of in a proper game.

Best of luck to all involved!
