Cavan v Roscommon

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

From what I saw last Saturday I would make Roscommon strong favourites.
They didn't bring some of their U21s on till late in the Mayo game and they were very impressive.
Gearoid didn't play to well last weekend.
Need a big performance from him + Mackey must play to give us a chance.

Think you'll find Givney didn't start that game. Neither did Argue. Gunner and Gearoid were centrefield that day.

I never said he did, all three have featured in one or both of the games I mentioned. Even apart from those two examples my point is that saying we have 3 big lads and we can dominate midfield is disregarding the reality, we talk up these lads all we want but the fact is they consistently fail to dominate a midfield battle. I have yet to see Givney dominating midfield at Championship. Gearoid doesn't look right and Argue has only started one championship game.

JonSmith,

My point is that I'd reckon if we started the 3 lads around the middle of the field we'd have a good chance of dominating that area. Givney and Gearoid have rarely been partnered there recently, Givney has been there alongside Reilly, Argue has been there the odd time, Gearoid is becoming a permanent fixture there, but I'd like to see a run of games where the 3 of them are at 8,9 and 12, might give us something different if all 3 were paired together. Just a thought.

I hope no player is taken out of the Junior team for these dead end quallifiers..

I presume you are joking there with that little quip.

S goldrick....the only joke here is that we think Cavan are achieving something by getting through a couple of rounds of these dead rubber quallifiers... Our only real hope of winning anything was a League title or maybe an Ulster title...both of which are gone... Do you really think this team can win the All Ireland...? These back door games are pointless and only give the stronger teames a 2nd chance and sadly we dont come close to that bracket..!!!

In another year or two there will be no Junior championship so don't talk it up to something that is not.

Only one side to win AI final this year and that will be Dublin however for sides like Cavan the qualifiers are about getting a run going and getting some confidence and experience into the side. The two run outs in Croke park was great for Cavan last year and from it you gained promotion to div 2 this spring. To call quailfiers dead rubbers games is pure nonsense without them Cavan would have finished the championship with a 6 point defeat to Armagh and how would that be any use to building for the future?

Gaa_lover is dead right, lets just award the AI title to Dublin and get back to watching the World Cup save all the remaining teams the trouble of progress and just relax and enjoy the sunshine. And maybe, if a broad consensus could be reached we could possibly award the title to the Dubs for the next five consecutive years and not be annoying ourselves with stupid notions of hope, dreams or even a basic level of competitive improvement.

ramor101 - thats actually a good idea, least then the club players wont be discarded for months on end without any games. Just as well cavan have no hurling team and no chance of winning the all-ireland like dublin/cork or else the club scene would probably be called off for a year or two..

What are your thoughts on this the 3rd game between our sides in nearly as many months? It really is a 50/50 game in my opinion and has the potential to be a great game. I hope there are no blanket defences but good open football. It's a pity we have to meet this early too. I've always had a soft spot for Cavan and would have liked both teams to go on a run in the qualifiers. Anyway I hope its a good fair game that is not ruined by controversy or bad refereeing.

Personally feel your being to kind with a 50-50 chance.
I'd say your lads will be a bit to strong for us judging on your performance against Mayo.
I don't think we're at our best at the moment.
Maybe the nervy win against Westmeath will put us back on track.
We shall see!

Cavan have no forwards in the class of Senan Kilbride, Cregg or Diarmuid Murtagh. Perhaps Mackey is in that bracket but he's struggled so much with injury that even if he plays he won't be anywhere near his best. Roscommon will do what they did to us in the League Final, pack the defence and be comfortable in the knowledge that we don't have the guile to unlock it or the pace and power to run through it for the duration of the game, stay disciplined and count on their better quality forwards to pick off more scores than ours will over the course of the 70 minutes. Monaghan and Kerry did something similar.

Gaa Lover....the Championship did end for Cavan with their defeat to Armagh...well it did for me. The club games should not be put back for this back door nonsence..

That's a crazy comment and you obviously weren't at the league final if that's what you think happened.

We had enough chances to win three games in that League Final and on another day if we'd taken just a couple of them we'd have been out of sight. We blitzed them in the opening 20 minutes and if they hadn't scored the flukey goal just before half time then we'd never have lost.

Of more relevence is the fact that they now have their U21 players back who were missing for the League final, where as we've lost Killian Clarke, McVeety, Dunne and we have half fit players in Mackey, Keating and Alan Clarke. It's going to take a big performance to win this one but we can do it.

Have Roscommon lost anyone other then Shine since the Mayo game? any U21's head to America like ourselves?

No, they didn't lose anyone to the States. David Keenan will be be back from injury, he had a very good game against Cavan in the League final, he missed the Mayo game through injury and Conor Daly also back. 2 good defenders.

The addition of the u21 players should compensate the loss of Donie Shine, like Diarmuid Murtage. U21s didn't start against Mayo, weren't involved in the League final against Cavan.

I don't understand why you call these games "dead Rubbers". a dead rubber is when the outcome doesn't have any bearing on the overall progress of either team. in the qualifiers it most certainly is important as the loser goes out and the winner carries on, they are arguably more important the the provincial championship matches in that respect, as their are no second chances.
I also can't fathom why you would consider a "B" competition that alot of counties don't even participate in more important that an "A" competition.

Wouldn't read anything into either league match
The final was played at 3 quarter pace and as nad as ye were at start for wides roscommon were worse at end cathal cregg alone kicked more wides than both teams together
Nothing can be drawn from league final roscommon panel is a lot stronger than then and they gave a poor sligo team a good beating since mayo match
By all accounts they are ticking along nicely with muraghs and smiths being very impressive for club as well as pearses and brigids being a cracker alike a county forwards v backs gsme
Cavan and ros will be a cracker if both at tbeir best

Lol yeah u know what I mean he alone kicked roughly 6 scoreable chances wide poor shooting by his standards looking back on it, there was some poor performances on both sides
Mackey was the stand out performance
I would imagine this will be a far better contest

I see that our friends from the west have high hopes for their under 21 players. However, it's not an easy thing for young guys to make an immediate impact at senior level. Great to see that the Rossies have so much young talent at the moment.Hopefully, it will translate itself into a provincial title sooner rather than later.

Compared to Croke Park in April, almost deserted, things should be tingling next Saturday / Sunday week.
