Cavan V Armagh

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

That was shocking. We were totally flat all day. Armagh won't beat anyone else with that display against a team that never showed up.
I agree with posters from other counties - we're all getting sick of this stupid lateral passing and negativity. We still haven't a functioning forward line.
As someone said we can play lots of football when we revert to our natural game which is at least spirited, tough and direct. When we do that we won't fall for the kind of tricks we saw today. Just imagine Monaghan or Tyrone tolerating that sort of thing. That said the removal of both teams from this years championship would put a stop to this nonsense - but it won't happen if the GAA think they might lose some money.

In your dreams! Will take a very good team to beat Monaghan this year even without Conor. Not a single forward in Cavan so don't be surprised with your result today.Bookies got it right !

Nice touch to see all the Cavan flags flying in Blaney yesterday. Great support for your nearest and dearest!

We knew that, going to Armagh after last year's poor showing by them, and given McGeeney's return, that this would be a tough assignment. The bookies had it right with Armagh as favourites. So the fact that we lost should not be a major surprise. It's the manner of our loss that hurts most. We placed two ball winners at the edge of the square and proceeded to play chess with the ball outfield, eventually firing in a high ball, when Armagh had bodies back to cover. To their credit, Keating and Givney did win a lot of possession, but were unable to convert with no options to off load to an in running pacey goal hungry forward. The only offload that produced a score was when Fergal Flannigan had the intelligence to make his run for the point, and he lined out at corner back.

We were very predictable and pedestrian. If Armagh hadn't kicked nine wides in the first half, the match would have been over as a contest at half time.

I don't think any of us expected a dispirited and disorganised performance. Whatever led to this, the phoney team selection mid week, the changes that were made prior to the match, the row, the changes they made at half time. All these things, and more, need to reassessed very quickly by the Management Team to get the spirit back up. Time to discard the selection of favourites and give all players selected on Wed the confidence of knowing that they will actually start.

I would have to agree with most of the posts in that is was the manner in which we lost is the big issue.

I just wonder..... Some of these lads having been playing u21 for several years and then in with the seniors. I think while they are physically in good nick i wonder are they mentally tired.

There are other valid points too in that we have become predictible, not very good at chasing a game from behind and i would not say a 100% settled team. There were touches of this type of play to be seen in the league final as well and I just wonder above all do some of these lads just need a break..

We keep hearing talk about the panel !!!
Time to start using them!!!
Surely to god we have someone who can score!!
Joe Schmidt attitude needed, if your not playing well no matter who you are your place is not secure.
We were expected to do well at midfield but failed miserably.
Where's last years fire!!!

I was afraid something like yesterday was going to happen. We are far too defensive. Too many players not good enough for this level.
I'm not saying to change everything but we changed nothing from last year.
We won the under 21 but what players have come in that were not there before.
I don't like the way we play but if was going to win us something I take it. But clearly it isn't
We need to go out now attack against westmeath cause we are not going to win anythong now so go out and play proper football.

I'd echo the calls to let the players go out and express themselves in what could well be our last game of championship 2014. Don't impose this horrible rigid negative futile football on them and have them playing like robots afraid to take risks.

Geography lesson ...... 'nearest and dearest' in Blaney are Armagh not Cavan. In north Monaghan it's Tyrone and Clones it's Fermanagh.

So get a life man!

The reluctance of the Cavan players to shoot yesterday was very worrying. Tipping and tapping the ball across the field about 30 yards out and nobody able to kick it over the bar. What do they do in training?

It's all about retaining possesion. The theory is, as long as you have the ball the opposition can't score. However at some stage in this possesion game when an opening arises you have to take a chance and shoot, otherwise you won't score and inevitably possesion will be lost. terry talked about it not being a blanket defence , about it also being about breaking at "pace", well where is the pace. Philip Tinnelly has pace, Nial smith has pace, There's not a whole lot of pace in the team compared to other teams. we need an injection of space in the team at some stage.

As I said before the Kerry game last year this lateral passing and slow negitive football will beat nobody of any use... If the team play this type of stuff v Westmeath its time for changes to be made at managment level... The team are been hamstrung if they are afraid to shoot from 30m out..no wonder they didnt score from play till the 50th minute... Horrible stuff to watch

I have never heard such nonsense in all my life as the above. Its a game of 70 mins. possession is important but so is getting the ball up the field quickly. Direct play is the only way. This cross field and backward passing only puts the team under pressure and gives away scores.

Your gas and predictable, I don't think you quite got it. Junior Cert Geography was no bother to a smart fella like you. Will you be finished this week or have you any more next week. Hope you get a good win on Sunday and enjoy the pints after.
Please God none of the mild mannered Monaghan players get caught up in any rough stuff like the Cavan boys did. I believe Terry and his team are requesting a video of the game to show the Cavan boys how the win. Hopefully we can catch up with Monaghan one day. Please God.

Definitely hit a raw nerve with you 2 Cavan lads. Chill out and try playing football. It's much more enjoyable you know. Getting beat is no disgrace except when you play 'the black death' way. In fairness to your management there was no criticism as long as you were winning against average teams.
And I repeat, Mackey aside, Cavan don't have 1 single forward of substance in the entire county. Trying other forwards just like 'shuffling' round chairs on the Titanic.

So use Mackey as a forward from the start against humiliated Westmeath, you might be pleasantly surprised.

And feel free to come over to the Monaghan site like some of your fellow county men for some genuine football debate.
