Cavan V Armagh

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Lads are reading too much from last Saturday. The aim was get to div 2. Done that, next is to beat Armagh in 6 weeks time. There were a lot of lads coming back from injuries short and long term. To be honest I tought we were asked more questions in areas we tought we had sorted. Likw full back , centre back wing back no pace in backs. We were hammered in midfield . Like I said they have 6 weeks to sort it out . Best of luck roll on Ulster.

Think Kevin Tierney should b in before Jack Brady and Martin Dunne. He has size power and pace to burn. He has not got fair crack. Hyland brought him on against Monaghan, Kerry and Roscommon with 2 min to go what point bringin on a man at that stage.

Conor Gilsenan
J McLoughlin if fit if not then Joshua Hayes
Rory Dunne
Killian Clarke
Damien O Reilly
James McEnroe
Conor Moynagh
Gearoid McKiernan
Michael Argue
Cian Mackey
Niall McDermott
Martin Reilly
Joe Dillon--1 half and M Dunne for other.
David Givney
Eugene Keating

Only possible problem here is that both midfielders like to go forward.

Personally think Argue and Mc Kiernan midfield is the only way to go, if they can be disciplined and both not go forward the same time. Would like to see C Moynagh start centre back, he was the classiest footballer on the pitch against the dubs and is a much better footballer than Clarke. Can not see the captain being dropped though. As for M.Dunne I think we will definetly start but make no mistake about it, he will not get near as much space against them as last year, same goes for mackey.I feel players such as Tinnelly/Mc Vitty with their running ability should get more game time.

agree almost completely with that team

i would start Dunne and leave him on if he's playing well
not a big fan of mcenroe but clarke is not intercounty centre back standard either.

Kevin Tierney started against Fermangh, Sligo, Roscommon in League , maybe another game too,. Saying he hasn't been getting chances is wrong

Armagh players told not to play club games? This might backfire, players need competitive game time. We saw how it affected us last weekend.

Clarke is a good reader of the game.I too think Conor Moynagh will own the no 6 jersey before too long. Also agree that McAveety and Tinnelly should've been given more senior experience,it is difficult to throw them in now from the start plus I would worry about the physicality and would they cope in the championship starting v Armagh. We need a no6 who is a good reader but also intelligent and strong who will stop a run through the centre. Most punters are picking 12 of the first team, its just a couple of positions causing all the debate along with the obvious need to get something done with the inside forward line. What worked last year against Armagh will not work this time although I think we will be far far better equipped in midfield this time around and Armaghs first choice two midfielders are out and possibly Aaron Kiernan too. Hopefully we don't pick up any injuries,6 weeks is a long time.

Agree with FoolsGold, Tierney has had plenty of chances to shine in the NFL. No doubting his physical attributes but he is very inconsistent and fumbles a lot of ball.
Lads when the promotion games finish in a few weeks and the countdown to the showdown in Armagh is on, whoever is on form and playing well then is who will more than likely be playing. Terry, Anthony and crew are very good like that in fairness and the form players generally get the nod. I'd say there are some lads who are doing a lot of running to catch up with the rest due to injury so their peaking will be primed for a few weeks before the Armagh game. So reserve judgement and team selections for a couple weeks as the hectic schedule coming up will tell a lot, even with injuries. (touch wood we get none).

Mc Laughlin and mooney very close too.would like to see moynagh at cb but don't think terry will move away from playing Clarke.we seriously need a bit of pace in the half back line

I would definitely hold Argue in reserve. No doubting his quality, but the big imponderables for this team are GMcK's ability to go 70 championship minutes, Givney's best position and MDunne's temperament. The big calf would be a serious option off the bench in a lot of these areas. Spring him after 45 minutes to frehen up the midfield or allow Givney to push on.

Just thinking will Cavan go with a new game plan than what happened against Armagh last year in Breffni? Remember all the talk was how Keating and Dunne destroyed the Armagh full back line. You can be assured that Tyrone will not repeat the same mistakes as last year so we should have a different game plan.
Thinking ahead will Terry and Co use a different plan by using Givney at full forward?
The Dunne /Keating plan doesent seem to be working too well this year and with a big man in there it gives us a whole new threat and the 2 lads can feed off him. It also takes the pressure off the 2 lads. I remember in Navan last year the big man was brilliant and won every ball that was kicked in as well as getting a few scores.
David Givney to me is a player of massive potential and I dont think we have seen his true worth to Cavan yet. I think this year he could really blossom.

1- First of all Killian Clarke is gone from the panel, he is away next week. 2- It looks like Argue is gone too as he needs an op on his knee from an injury that occurred before the Dublin game that has not healed. 3- Dillon is not on the panel. 4- Mackey hasnt played any football since a half against Galway due to a groin injury and looks like he will be touch and go for Armagh.

Things are not looking good but we have a good squad this year with a lot of capable lads pushing for a starting spot

Hyland might try out a few things tonight in Munterconnaught as its the last chance before the Armagh game. All Stars will give them a game of it with Declan McKiernan, Killian Clarke, Cian Mackey and Niall McDermott all playing for the All Stars!

I see our old friend Marty Duffy will take charge of this one. Maybe not a bad thing, he does owe us a favour or two after last year

Without Killian Clarke, who will come in for him? I could see a fb line of Hayes (to pick up J Clarke), Rory Dunne and McLoughlin. If Rory doesn't make it, I'd expect Damian Reilly to play fb.
