Offaly manager Leo O’Connor singled out goalkeeper Liam Hoare for special praise after Wednesday night’s epic Leinster U20HC semi-final victory over Kilkenny.

The Carrig & Riverstown clubman kept out a second half penalty from Gearóid Dunne and made several other vital saves as the Faithful prevailed by a point at a heaving Glenisk O’Connor Park to move within 60 minutes of retaining their provincial crown and reaching another All-Ireland final.

It came after the talented teenager's life was turned upside down a few months after he lined out in the 2022 All-Ireland MHC final when he was diagnosed with a form of Lymphoma, which was followed by chemotherapy.

All through his treatment, however, he remained positive and is now reaping the rewards.

“It’s a credit to everyone who rallied around Liam,” O’Connor told Midlands 103.

“We worked with Liam throughout the whole thing. And tonight caps it for him. It’s what life gives you. He’s still only 19 years of age. It’s just incredible.”
