I feel Cavan have a great chance of beating Monaghan on Saturday evening. The Farney men have a number of injury problems at the moment. And in recent times they have often been vulnerable in the opening rounds. Remember Fermanagh last year and Down 12 months previous. Add in a home venue at Breffni Park. Some of Cavan's defeats in the NFL were by the narrowest of margin and at a time when Mickey Graham with club commitments had no time to settle in. Notice that Graham said today that he had no injury problems either. The boys in blue could be a great bet. Triple H (Meath) - Posts: 551 - 14/05/2019 19:53:04 2184106 Link 2 |
I would be shocked and very shocked. They may put it up to monaghan a la derry yesterday v tyrone. But I struggle to see how they can get a result.

Have thought the last few times that Cavan could catch us - it is coming, just hope its not this week. bigfrankt (Monaghan) - Posts: 123 - 15/05/2019 09:28:00 2184224 Link 1 |
It's going to be tight - always is between the 2 teams. As always, it's down to how quiet we can keep McManus. McGleenan wasn't tactically astute enough to have a plan in place for him and Hyland relied on an overall defensive system rather than a specific plan to stop him. I think Mickey Graham will have a plan in place. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5018 - 15/05/2019 09:57:11 2184235 Link 0 |
Well the opening rounds have gone well for us last year and the year before....if you're going by the past its the second round where things have fallen for the last three ulster championships. IF we were to get past Cavan then it might be a good time for Down or Armagh! I think we have enough to beat Cavan but its fine margins. Cavan have a much better midfield IMO, we have better firepower, we are fairly even at the back and our GK is better. I hope we can do it but like most Monaghan ppl I wouldnt be shocked if Cavan beat us (just disappointed!) Gator (Monaghan) - Posts: 238 - 15/05/2019 10:08:46 2184241 Link 0 |
Can't see it myself unfortunately. It'll be a close game throughout, with nothing in it. Cavan will mentally collapse with 7-8 minutes to go and Monaghan will sneak a two point win. Cavan_Shambles (Cavan) - Posts: 575 - 15/05/2019 12:15:47 2184275 Link 0 |
Every dog has its day. Worry from our perspective is a Cavan win is long overdue in this fixture. If we beat ye that will be 4 wins this decade with two in breffini which correct if am wrong you would need to go back to the 50s for that level of dominance in this fixture. It's usually pretty tight. I'd be hopeful rather than confident here.

Yeah I get what you're saying. I still think Monaghan will come away with a hard fought win though. If you recall our game in 2015, we were four up with ten minutes left and we blew a great opportunity. Mental fragility cost us. Against Kerry in the league this year we played them off the pitch for 35 minutes but lay down in the second half because of a lack of belief. I've never seen these lads beat someone they weren't expected to beat. I don't expect that to end this Saturday. Put it like this, I'd be surprised if we won. Unless Graham has instilled a bit of belief in them since the league. If so, we might just do it. Cavan_Shambles (Cavan) - Posts: 575 - 15/05/2019 15:14:45 2184328 Link 0 |
I think Monaghan will want to lay down a marker after there poor league. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2088 - 15/05/2019 15:25:33 2184331 Link 0 |
I've never seen these lads beat someone they weren't expected to beat. They weren't expected to beat Mayo in Castlebar 2 years ago. . (and before you say that was only the league, you were the one who referenced the Kerry league game this year) cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5018 - 15/05/2019 15:35:45 2184336 Link 0 |
Fair point, I stand corrected. Only one game though.

It's actually a strong finish we need rather than a good start. Cavan usually start games quite well and compete for most of them. Our ability to close out games however is sorely lacking.

I think Cavan have just been lacking a really top notch inside forward. In many of their games I've seen they've competed very well but just didn't have that marquee forward like Monaghan do in McManus, that will score 1-4 or 1-5 to tip the balance in their favour. Cavan will be really up for this. Mickey Graham's first gchampionship ame in charge of his home county in his local town. I'm worried. Monaghan1 (Monaghan) - Posts: 2 - 15/05/2019 17:20:25 2184368 Link 0 |
Monaghan are missing too many of the team that went well last year. It's not about Cavan being due to beat Monaghan....you don't haer about Meath being due to beat Dublin ..... Cavan have a decent team, new manager and have a great chance on Saturday :( Beggan will need to bypass the midfield a la the kickouts to McAnespie and Malone against Kerry in Clones. Hitting it near McKernan will be a foregone conclusion and ultimately possession wins (most) matches. If Monaghan can make an Ulster final, with the players back, they could beat Tyrone / DL. However it's getting there that's the issue right now. Cavan by 2 me thinks .... and I'll be pure sick. Mon79 (Monaghan) - Posts: 81 - 15/05/2019 17:27:28 2184369 Link 0 |
Monaghan have come through some very tight squeezes against Cavan in recent history- a point in 2013 which could have been a draw but for Marty Duffy; a point in 2015 having been dead and buried with 20 to go; and a 3 point win in 2017 with Cavan hitting the post at the death. The general trend after those games was decent progress for Monaghan and an early exit for Cavan. Eddie the Exile (Monaghan) - Posts: 1064 - 16/05/2019 11:51:54 2184543 Link 0 |

Excellent post Eddie..."Cavan are more likely to have figured out Monaghan than the other way around I'm thinking."...this probably sums it up best. Doesn't seem likely we'll see MOR pull too many surprises, we're probably a bit too 1 dimensional unfortunately. moodoo (Monaghan) - Posts: 441 - 16/05/2019 17:01:58 2184669 Link 0 |
