Thought we could do with a thread about the various Meath clubs that are/will be in Leinster Championship action. Ratoath Royal (Meath) - Posts: 1362 - 20/10/2016 16:45:42 1927937 Link 13 |
I think whoever wins between Ash/Simonstown may have little interest in Leinster to be honest and I wouldn't blame them. ziggy32001 (Meath) - Posts: 8354 - 20/10/2016 17:36:38 1927957 Link 8 |
Why?

It would be such a great achievement for either club to win considering that they have not won too many and accordingly celebrations for either side would last quite a while I expect. If my stats are correct only 15 teams have won the senior championship in the last 60 years with one team winning it 19 times, another 7 times and another 6 times - 3 clubs have won over 50% of the championships over the last 60 years. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 20/10/2016 21:54:07 1928015 Link 13 |
I hope that whoever wins the SFC takes the Leinster campaign seriously and hopefully make progress in it, we haven't had a winning team since Dunshaughlin in 2002 and haven't had a finalist since Skryne in 2004, in fact in the last 30 years a Meath club has only reached a Leinster Final on 3 occasions including Senchalstown in 1994 and that's a poor record for a proud county like ourselves. In comparison our clubs have fared much better in the Junior and Intermediate competitions and dare I say it those clubs seem to have taken Leinster more seriously. Whether it's Donaghmore/Ash or Simonstown I want to see them do well and will be cheering them on. Richieq (Meath) - Posts: 3734 - 21/10/2016 00:27:44 1928046 Link 13 |
Because I'd imagine both clubs went out this year with the county title their primary goal, anything after is a bonus. Ashbourne have never won the title and for simonstown it has probably been over 10 years so you'd expect massive celebrations from the winning team. Celebrations that wouldn't really suit preparation for a leinster game haha

Not sure they would be as focused as winning the Meath Cahamp will be huge for either club, also will the winners be out in Leinster the week after?

Ratoath 2-20, Carlow Town 2-9. Ratoath play Offaly Intermediate Champions Clodiagh Gaels in the quarter final. Hopefully Darragh Kelly is in a condition to return as he was missed in the back line. Ratoath Royal (Meath) - Posts: 1362 - 22/10/2016 16:59:21 1928322 Link 13 |
Good result that and well done! Would the Offaly team be favorites?

I literally have no idea. I know nothing about the Offaly team .With the likes of the McGowans, O'Hanrahans and (hopefully) Kelly we have a chance. Also we're at home.

From 2007 till 2011 Meath clubs won the Leinster club JFC 5 times in a row. In 2012 it was decided to expand intermediate and senior so the junior grade lost it's top 4 teams. Is it any surprise Meath teams have only reached the final once since then? CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1646 - 22/10/2016 19:10:58 1928349 Link 12 |
The decision to expand Senior and Intermediate was obviously a mistake.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne have won the Senior championship 3 times, last in 1942, while Simonstown Gaels have never won a Senior title.

Was it not just Donaghmore that won those 3 titles, and not the new amalgamation club so technically they've never won it? That's just what a club member told me in PT the year they lost to Navan. He said this would be their first title. And I'm rather shocked to hear Simonstown never won it, I suppose that was very presumptuous of me. Uncle_Fester (Meath) - Posts: 217 - 23/10/2016 11:12:21 1928422 Link 0 |
The three titles won was as the original club title of Donaghmore GFC. However, Donaghmore GFC didn't amalgamate with Ashbourne, they simply changed their title of the club to Donaghmore/Ashbourne CLG to incorporate the players from Ashbourne. I think they did it around the late nineties. It was also with the impending departure from their original home in the Wotton, to the new premises. Ashbourne, to the best of my knowledge never had a club actually based solely from the Ashbourne village. I'm open to correction in those facts. I think Simonstown Gaels only formed in the eighties, as Navan expanded. And I think they had only played in 2 Senior finals, losing to Bkackhall Gaels famously in 2003 (I think) and either the year previous or after. Again I may be incorrect. Uncle_Fester - There is always debate about whether a team in town or parish is the same team. I would expect that the Donaghmore team that won it before collected players from an even bigger area as was the normal at that time so one could justify and say that they won 3 before and someone else maybe also argue the reverse. Anyway 74 years is along time in anybody's football life (Both SG and DA have been in recent finals and given up big leads to lose so whoever wins this 55/50 match will enjoy it for a while- best of luck to both sides. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 23/10/2016 12:11:28 1928427 Link 13 |
No Donaghmore/Ashbourne have won 3 senior titles previously in 1927, 28 and 42 as Donaghmore. The club hasn't disbanded since and in 1996 Donaghmore changed their name to Donaghmore/Ashbourne to reflect the increased number of players and supporters from Ashbourne. Because the club just changed their name and didn't amalagamate with another club they will be aiming for their 4th title next Sunday. nmsmithy96 (Meath) - Posts: 108 - 23/10/2016 12:19:43 1928428 Link 0 |
Yes Donaghmore have won the title, but Donaghmore/Ashbourne have never won it.

Yeah I'd agree with that idea of arguing either way in terms of titles won. But I think Donaghmore/Ashbourne should be going for their 4th title in their history. But best of luck to both clubs. Good to see a title going outside of the usual few. David (Meath) - Posts: 567 - 23/10/2016 12:34:47 1928430 Link 0 |
